Valkenburg Christmas Market 2026: In the Town Caves

Last Updated: 1 July 2026
No Comments

The Valkenburg Christmas Market is the only underground Christmas market in the Netherlands, held inside historic marlstone caves (mergelgrotten) that have been quarried since Roman times. Kerststad Valkenburg (Christmas Town Valkenburg) transforms this small Limburg town for nearly two months, with markets in two separate cave systems, a Christmas parade, and a whole town centre lit up for the season.

Visitor Feedback

What Visitors Loved

  • The cave setting itself is genuinely unlike any other market in Europe. Walking through centuries-old marlstone tunnels lined with lights and Christmas trees is an experience visitors say is worth the trip for the novelty alone.
  • The Velvet Cave (Fluweelengrot) is consistently praised as the more atmospheric of the two, with fewer crowds, more space between stalls, and impressive medieval carvings on the walls.
  • The town above ground gets high marks for committing fully to the season. Illuminated streets, the Shadow Lights route, Santa’s Village, and the Christmas Parade through the old town all add up to a complete festive day out.
  • MergelRijk is recommended for families. The interactive sand sculptures, fossil digging, and storytelling keep children engaged for well over an hour.

Common Complaints

  • The quality of goods inside the caves divides opinion sharply. Multiple visitors describe the stalls as overly commercial, with mass-produced items that don’t match the entrance price. Those expecting German-market-level handmade crafts are most likely to be disappointed.
  • Weekend parking is a recurring frustration. Several visitors report full car parks, long walks from overflow lots, and steep inclines that are difficult for families with prams or anyone with limited mobility.
  • Costs add up quickly. Each cave requires a separate ticket, and with MergelRijk and Winter Wonderland also priced separately, a family visiting multiple attractions can spend a significant amount before buying food or gifts.
  • The caves can feel crowded at peak times, particularly the Municipal Cave on Saturday afternoons. Bottlenecks form at popular stalls near the entrance, though visitors who wait 10 to 15 minutes or choose early time slots report a much better experience.

The Bottom Line

The underground setting makes Valkenburg unlike any other market in the Netherlands, and for first-time visitors, the cave experience alone justifies the trip. Visit on a weekday, book the earliest time slot, and start with the Velvet Cave for a less crowded introduction.

What to Expect

Kerststad Valkenburg is more than just the caves. The entire town centre is decorated, with illuminated streets, a free Shadow Lights route, street theatre, and Santa’s Village above ground. The twice-weekly Landal Christmas Parade through the old town is one of the highlights, featuring lit floats and costumed dancers. If you’re short on time, prioritise the Municipal Cave (Gemeentegrot) for the largest underground market experience, and book your time slot well in advance as popular sessions sell out.

Food header.

Local Specialties

  • Limburgse Vlaai: The signature tart from Limburg province. Fillings range from rijstevlaai (rice custard) to fruit varieties like cherry or apricot. Every bakery in Valkenburg sells their own version.
  • Zoervleis (Zuurvlees): A Limburgish sweet-sour beef stew, slow-cooked with gingerbread (ontbijtkoek) and apple syrup. Often served with frites at market stalls.
  • Stroopwafels: The freshly pressed ones from inside the Gemeentegrot are a must. Follow the smell to the stroopwafel stand near the cave entrance.
  • Oliebollen: Traditional Dutch doughnuts, dusted in powdered sugar. A New Year’s Eve staple found throughout the season here.
  • Poffertjes: Small, fluffy Dutch pancakes served with butter and powdered sugar.
  • Patatje Oorlog: Literally “war fries.” Dutch-style frites topped with mayonnaise, peanut satay sauce, and chopped raw onions.
  • Speculaas Cookies (Speculaaskoekjes): Spiced shortcrust biscuits stamped with traditional figures, a staple across Dutch markets.
Gifts header.

What to Buy

The standout vendor in the Gemeentegrot is Aarts Mergelatelier, which handcrafts decorations, candle holders, and nativity scenes from local marlstone (mergel), the same stone quarried from the caves. These are genuinely unique to Valkenburg and make memorable gifts. Beyond that, set your expectations: several visitors note that many stalls sell mass-produced goods rather than handmade crafts. If artisan quality is important to you, focus on the local mergel products and Limburgse specialities rather than the general gift stalls.
