Where to Stay: Hotels Near Christmas Markets in Europe

Last Updated: 18 February 2026
No Comments

Location matters when you’re visiting Christmas markets, especially in cities with multiple market sites spread across different neighbourhoods. In each of my hotel guides, I recommend places to stay based on proximity to the markets, quality and comfort. Use this page to find the right destination, or head to my individual market guides where I link to hotels for that city.

Austria

  • Graz – The main market is in Hauptplatz, the historic main square. A lovely city that doesn’t get enough attention.
  • Hallstatt – The Christmas event is just one day, but the town is worth staying longer for. Stay on Marktplatz or by the lake.
  • Innsbruck – Look for hotels near the Golden Roof and the River Inn. The mountain backdrop in winter is spectacular.
  • Klagenfurt – The historic centre is slightly inland from Lake Wörthersee.
  • Linz – Old town accommodation in Austria’s underrated third city.
  • Salzburg – Multiple market locations, so where you stay matters. I break it down by market.
  • Vienna – I recommend the Museum Quarter area for the best access to the main markets.
  • Villach – A small city with a couple of good centrally located options.

Belgium

  • Antwerp – A great modern city with an excellent winter market. Worth more than a day trip.
  • Bruges – Most hotels are near the Grote Markt, which is where you want to be.
  • Brussels – The market centres on Grand Place, one of the most beautiful squares in Europe.
  • Ghent – Stay near Sint-Baafsplein, in front of Saint Bavo’s Cathedral.
  • Leuven – Often visited as a day trip, but these options work well for an overnight stay.

Denmark

  • Copenhagen – A fantastic winter destination, though accommodation is expensive. Book early.

Estonia

  • Tallinn – The market is on Town Hall Square in the centre of the beautifully preserved medieval old town.

France

  • Colmar – Anywhere in Vieux Colmar works, but La Petite Venise, the canal district, is especially pretty.
  • Lille – Stay near Place Rihour or Grand Place for the best market access.
  • Strasbourg – The most popular areas are around Place Kléber and near the Cathedral. Book well ahead; Strasbourg fills up fast.

Germany

  • Bamberg – The market is on Maximiliansplatz in the historic old town.
  • Berlin – Plenty of great neighbourhoods to choose from. I narrow it down by market location.
  • Bremen – A charming Hanseatic city in northern Germany with one of the prettiest markets.
  • Dresden –  Stay in the Altstadt for easy access to the Striezelmarkt and the other markets.
  • Dortmund – Options for all budgets near the city centre markets.
  • Düsseldorf – The Altstadt near Flinger Straße and Rathaus Marktplatz is the best base.
  • Frankfurt – Known for luxury hotels and modern accommodation.
  • Munich – Some stunning boutique hotels near Marienplatz.
  • Münster – The main market is at the Historic Town Hall and Prinzipalmarkt.
  • Stuttgart – Stay near Schlossplatz to be in the middle of it.

Hungary

  • Budapest – The main markets are in the 5th District: Vörösmarty Square, St Stephen’s Basilica and Elizabeth Square. I lived here for years and know the neighbourhoods well.

Ireland

  • Dublin – Cosy places to stay near the castle and the city centre markets.

Italy

  • Bologna – Stay near Piazza Maggiore in the historic centre. The food alone is worth the trip.
  • Milan – The main winter market is at Piazza Duomo, in front of the stunning cathedral.
  • Trieste – One of my favourite winter cities. Beautiful and still under the radar.

Latvia

  • Riga – Stay central. Riga can be bitterly cold in winter, so you’ll want to minimise walking time.

Lithuania

  • Vilnius – The famous Christmas tree is on Cathedral Square. Stay nearby, and you’re within walking distance to everything.

Netherlands

  • Amsterdam – Stylish boutique hotels near the canal district and winter markets.
  • Valkenburg – Stay near the historic caves where the unique underground market is held.

Poland

  • Gdansk – One of the most festive cities in Poland, and still great value.
  • Kraków – Home to Poland’s most popular Christmas market on the Main Square.
  • Poznan – The market is on Old Market Square and Wolności Square.
  • Warsaw – Excellent hotels near the Old Market Square in the city centre.
  • Wroclaw – Anywhere in the historic centre or on Cathedral Island works well.

Portugal

  • Lisbon – Winter sun and Christmas markets. The main tree is at Praça do Comércio.

Romania

  • Sibiu – Stay directly on Piața Mare, the main square. Sibiu is one of Romania’s most charming towns.

Slovakia

  • Bratislava – The market fills Hlavné Námestie and spills into the surrounding streets.

Slovenia

  • Ljubljana – Stay near Prešeren Square and you’re within walking distance of everything. One of my favourite small capitals.

Sweden

  • Stockholm – The main Christmas market is at Stortorget in Gamla Stan, the old town.

Switzerland

  • Basel – Two market locations in the Altstadt. Basel’s market is one of the best in Switzerland.
  • Bern – Central old town accommodation with easy market access.
  • Geneva – Walk to the markets at the Jardin Anglais by the lake.
  • Zurich – Stay anywhere between the train station and the Opera House near Lake Zürich.

United Kingdom

England

  • Bath – Affordable hotels near the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey and Pulteney Bridge.
  • Birmingham – Stay near Victoria Square for the German-style market.
  • Bristol – Hotels within walking distance of Broadmead.
  • Exeter – The market is on Cathedral Green, just off the High Street.
  • London – Hotels near Hyde Park for easy access to Winter Wonderland.
  • Manchester – The Northern Quarter gives you quick access to Piccadilly Gardens and the surrounding markets.
  • Nottingham – Stay in the Lace Market district or near Old Market Square.
  • Winchester – The market surrounds the Cathedral. A small city, so most central hotels work.
  • York – Hotels near The Shambles and Parliament Street in the heart of the city.

Scotland

  • Edinburgh – Find a hotel near the Mound and East Princes Street Gardens.

Wales

  • Cardiff – Several decent options near Cardiff Castle.
