Luxembourg Christmas Market 2026 and the Winterlights Festival

Last Updated: 1 July 2026
No Comments

For its size, the Luxembourg Christmas Market punches well above its weight. The Winterlights festival runs for over a month, spanning multiple locations across a city where you can walk from the medieval Grund quarter to the modern Kirchberg plateau in under an hour. Expect Luxembourgish Glühwäin, grompereikichelcher (potato fritters) and an ice rink overlooking the dramatic Pétrusse valley.

Recommended Tours

Visit the city’s highlights with this Luxembourg walking tour with wine tastings. You’ll explore the city’s central areas and the old town, taking in key landmarks and attractions. What makes this tour unique is the wine tastings, where you’ll sample local sparkling and white wines.

What to Expect

The Winterlights Festival adds to the atmosphere with activities and entertainment spread across the city, including the Cirque du Luxembourg, festive movie screenings and Winterkids reading sessions.

Chalets and attractions cater to various tastes, from craft items, toys, and jewellery to a diverse selection of food and drink, including the local favourite, Gromperekichelcher. Adding to the lively vibe are rides such as a Ferris wheel and a miniature train, along with a programme of concerts and workshops designed specifically for children.

  • Gromperekichelcher: These are delicious fried potato cakes, often flavoured with onions, parsley and sometimes bacon.
  • Glühwäin: Infused with spices such as cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
  • Thüringer: A type of sausage originating from Thuringia in Germany. It’s grilled on a large open flame, delivering a smoky flavour.
  • Flammkuchen: This is a thin pizza-like dish hailing from the border regions of France and Germany.
  • Pretzels: Traditional salted varieties and those topped with sesame seeds, cheese, or even poppy seeds.
  • Schokokuss: Fluffy marshmallow-like sweets covered in a thin layer of chocolate.
  • Boxemännchen: Traditionally baked on Saint Nicholas Day, December 6th, this bread-like pastry is eagerly anticipated by children in Luxembourg each year. It’s often shaped like a small man and sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Sustainable Travel Tips

Energy: Choose a hotel operating with renewable energy sources.

Food Waste: With tempting food stalls, it’s easy to over-order. Plan your meals wisely to avoid wasting food.

Ethical Shopping: By purchasing handmade goods, you’re supporting the local economy.

Sustainable Food: Opt for dishes made with locally sourced and plant-based ingredients.

Transport: Luxembourg is the first country to make all public transport free. Use this extensive network of trams, buses, and trains to explore the city.

Walking and Cycling: Luxembourg’s capital is compact and walkable. Choose to walk or rent a bicycle for short distances.
