Last Updated: 1 July 2026

Three medieval spires rising above a compact market square make Lichfield one of the most photogenic cathedral cities in the Midlands. The Lichfield Christmas Market makes the most of that backdrop, filling the cobbled streets around the cathedral with stalls, food, and live entertainment.

Places to Stay

If you’re spending the night in Lichfield, you’ll want to stay in the very town centre to be at the heart of the action. I recommend St John’s House, a reasonably priced, luxury B&B.

What to Expect

Lichfield is known for its historic three-spired medieval cathedral, which stands out against the winter sky. As the birthplace of Samuel Johnson, the city has a notable literary heritage.

The Lichfield Fayre is a key event in the city’s calendar, held on a Sunday. It takes place in three different locations, both indoors and outdoors, attracting visitors from nearby areas.

Stalls feature handmade decorations, British meat pies, and fragrant flowers, along with a variety of other local products. Food options include classic fish and chips, Indian takeaway, and regional craft beers.

Throughout the day, local choirs, bands, and Morris dancers perform, while elves add a playful atmosphere. A British double-decker Bus Bar offers a unique experience, and face painting provides entertainment for children.

The Fayre offers a variety of activities and attractions, making it a popular one-day event for all ages.

Sustainability Tips

  • Eco-Friendly Hotels: Lichfield offers hotels that incorporate green practices, including the use of renewable energy, water-saving fixtures, and waste reduction initiatives. Look for those with recognised eco-certifications.
  • Locally Sourced Food and Products: Support local farmers and artisans by choosing food and crafts made in the area. This reduces transportation emissions and supports the regional economy.
  • Waste Reduction: Be mindful of waste by bringing reusable bags and containers to reduce your environmental impact. Many local cafes support reusable cups for drinks. Check for recycling bins in public spaces.
  • Vegetarian and Vegan Options: Numerous eateries in Lichfield provide plant-based meals. Choosing these options helps support sustainable diets and lowers environmental impact.
  • Public Transport: Use Lichfield’s train and bus services to get around. Both Lichfield City and Trent Valley stations connect to the West Midlands rail network, making travel easier and reducing car use.
  • Cycling and Walking: The city centre is pedestrian-friendly, with paths and cycle routes. Explore landmarks like the cathedral on foot or by renting a bike to minimise environmental impact.
  • Reusable Water Bottles: Carry a refillable water bottle. Some cafes and public spots offer free refills, reducing the need for single-use plastic.
  • Green Spaces: Visit Beacon Park or Stowe Pool, both offering scenic walks and wildlife spotting. These areas are maintained using sustainable practices, including natural habitat preservation and minimal pesticide use.
