Augsburg Christmas Market 2026: 40 Minutes from Munich

Last Updated: 1 October 2026
No Comments

Pay attention to the sweets here. The Augsburg Christmas Market has its own plum cake, its own style of pretzel and a sweet dough St. Nicholas called a Dambedei, so it pays to arrive hungry. Go in the afternoon for the handmade crafts and Swabian food, then stay for the angel performance.

Central Hotels

It’s worth staying in the central district around Maximilianstraße and Fuggerplatz. This area offers easy access to attractions and is conveniently located within walking distance of the market. I recommend the highly rated City Hotel Ost am Kö in this area.

City tours header.

Recommended Tour

I recommend this city tour of Augsburg, as it presents many of its highlights with a local guide at a reasonable cost. It’s particularly suitable if you’re new to the city of Augsburg. You’ll see the famous Fuggerei, Augsburg Town Hall, and Augsburg Cathedral.

Visitor Feedback

What Visitors Loved

  • The Engelesspiel is the highlight in most visitor accounts, with angels appearing at the town hall windows to music and a children’s choir.
  • Visitors who compare it with Munich describe a calmer market, with handmade crafts rather than the same souvenirs on every stall.
  • The Renaissance architecture makes a handsome backdrop, and the stalls spread along several streets so it rarely feels confined.

Common Complaints

  • The square fills well before the angels appear, and latecomers struggle to find a clear view.
  • Evenings at the weekend bring coach groups as well as locals, so the main stretch is busiest just before the show.

The Bottom Line

Treat the angels as the finale rather than the whole visit. Arrive early to secure a spot, and keep the stalls and side streets for the quieter part of the afternoon.

What to expect text header image

What to Expect

The market stretches from Rathausplatz to Martin-Luther-Platz, taking in Philippine-Welser-Straße and Maximilianstraße and reaching as far as the front of St. Moritz Church. The Renaissance town hall and the Perlachturm bell tower look down on the main square.

That layout leaves room for a wide range of chalets and draws nearly a million visitors a year, from Germany and abroad.

The Engelesspiel is the one thing to plan around. Angels appear on the town hall balcony in the evening, each one standing in for a day of Advent. Families can also head to the area near Moritzplatz, which has its own Children’s Christmas market.

Local specialties header.

Regional Specialties

  • Zwetschgendatschi (plum cake): Augsburg’s signature bake, sweet, juicy plums on a light, fluffy dough.
  • Augsburger Brezen (pretzels): Slightly doughier than a regular pretzel and typically enjoyed with butter.
  • Dambedei: Sweet, doughy figures made for St Nicholas Day in Augsburg, often shaped like little bishops.
  • Kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes): Crisp, golden and served with apple sauce. A good vegetarian option, though some stalls cook them in lard.
  • Lebkuchen (gingerbread): Soft, spiced and often heart-shaped, with decorations that make good gifts.
  • Schmalzkuchen: Bite-sized deep-fried dough dusted with icing sugar.
  • Regional Glühwein (mulled wine): Spiced with local flavours and fruit, and the stalls differ in their recipes.
  • Eierpunsch (egg punch): Egg yolk, sugar, white wine and vanilla, like a creamy German eggnog.
Gifts header.

Gifts and Stocking Fillers

  • Hand-carved wooden ornaments: Many stalls sell carved pieces, from festive shapes to local landmarks.
  • Augsburg-themed ceramics: Mugs and plates decorated with the city’s historic buildings.
  • Locally made toys: Wooden toys and hand-sewn dolls in the region’s toy-making tradition.
  • Bavarian beer sets: Local Augsburg brews, often bundled with matching glassware.
  • Augsburg calendars and history books: Photographic calendars and pictorial guides to the city’s past.

Sustainability Tips

  • Come by train: Trains from Munich take roughly 40 minutes, and the walk from Augsburg’s main station (Hauptbahnhof) to the market takes around 15.
  • Ride the trams: The city’s trams, run by the utility swa, use 100 percent renewable electricity and its buses run on biogas, so they are the low-carbon way to reach your hotel.
  • Look out for the Christkindltram: swa decorates a tram for Advent and runs it on changing lines across the city, so you may catch it on the way back.
  • Visit the Fuggerei trees: The Fuggerei sells Nordmann firs from the Fugger Foundation’s own forests on selected days, with proceeds going to renovating its apartments.
