With 10+ markets spread across imperial squares, palace grounds, and cobblestone lanes, each with its own personality, this is a city that rewards those who explore beyond the famous Town Hall.

Convenient Hotels

Vienna is designed in a series of rings that move out from the Danube Canal. The area between the canal and the main ring road is called the Innere Stadt (Inner City), where you’ll most likely want to stay. Another option is the Museums Quarter, where I like to stay. It’s a cool area with independent stores, small bars, and great brunch spots, all within walking distance of the main sights.

I suggest staying at the 25hours Hotel in this area. It’s near the Volkstheater underground station, making it easy to get around if walking is inconvenient. I’ve stayed at this hotel, and it’s quirky yet comfortable.

Otherwise, my guide to hotels in Vienna lists several other options covering all budgets.

Recommended Tours

I recommend this walking tour of central Vienna as it gives an overview of many of the city’s main attractions, such as the Hofburg Palace, Palmenhouse, and Vienna State Opera

Another popular tour is this Viennese market tour at the iconic fresh food market, Naschmarkt.

Visitor Feedback Header

Visitor Feedback

What Visitors Loved

  • The variety is Vienna’s biggest strength. With 10+ markets across the city, each with its own character, visitors say you need at least 2-3 days to do it justice.
  • The Rathausplatz light display is spectacular. Look out for the floating heart that crosses the square every 30 minutes from dusk — it’s a highlight even for visitors who found the market itself too busy.
  • The smaller markets get the most love from locals and repeat visitors. Freyung, Am Hof, and Spittelberg are consistently praised for better quality crafts, food, and atmosphere.
  • Karlsplatz (Art Advent) stands out for handmade, artisan-quality gifts. Everything sold must be made by the seller, so you won’t find mass-produced souvenirs here.
  • Each market has its own collectible punsch mug, which visitors love collecting as souvenirs. You pay a deposit and can return it or keep it.

Common Complaints

  • Rathausplatz is the most crowded and commercial of the markets. Several locals recommend seeing it for the lights but skipping the food and craft stalls in favour of smaller markets.
  • Weekend evenings at the popular markets can be uncomfortably packed. Multiple visitors described shoulder-to-shoulder crowds after 4pm on Saturdays.
  • Prices at the larger markets feel inflated, particularly for food and drinks. The smaller markets tend to offer better value.
  • Stephansplatz market consistently underwhelms. Despite the beautiful cathedral backdrop, visitors describe the stalls and food as average.

The Bottom Line

Vienna’s real magic is in the variety. The main Rathausplatz market is worth seeing for the lights, but locals and experienced visitors prefer the smaller markets like Freyung, Am Hof, and Spittelberg for a more authentic experience. For the best visit, explore after dark but on a weekday, and give yourself at least two full days to cover the highlights.

List of the Best Markets

1. Rathausplatz (Town Hall)

Full details are listed above. This traditional Viennese Advent market is at Rathausplatz, Vienna’s Town Hall. Lights and decorations cover the trees and park pathways. Viennese desserts are a specialty, as are classic mulled wine, hot cider, and hot chocolate. This is the best ice-skating rink for children, and other events include gingerbread-baking classes and candle-making.

Maria Theresien Platz gardens with snow.

2. Maria Theresien Platz

A short walk from the Town Hall, past the famous Volksgarten and Hofburg Palace, will bring you to Maria Theresien Platz, which you can see in the image above. This is the stunning square between the Museum of Natural History and the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art). It’s an incredible location at the best of times, but starting in mid-November, it becomes home to the Christmas Village, which runs until New Year’s.

Belvedere Palace and formal gardens.

3. Belvedere Palace

The Baroque Belvedere Palace is one of Vienna’s many historic palaces. It’s a beautifully curated formal garden that hosts 40 traditional market stalls. Even though this is a popular destination, I found it less crowded than some other areas.

5. Stephansplatz

In front of St Stephen’s Cathedral is the busy Stephansplatz, where 40 stalls sell Austrian products. Located in the heart of Vienna’s pedestrian shopping district, you’re sure to come across it. It’s a nice spot for a casual mulled wine, though the stalls themselves rarely impress.

Karlskirch at Karlplatz Christmas Market Vienna Austria

6. Art Advent on Karlsplatz

Art Advent focuses on art installations, musical performances, and children’s events. The products are locally sourced and sustainably produced, and all food served is certified organic. It’s the only fully organic Christmas market in Austria, and the handmade crafts are a genuine step above the other markets.

Status: Confirmed
Art Advent dates: 13th November to 23rd December 2026
Location: Karlsplatz, near the Karlskirche.
Opening times: 12pm to 8pm.

What to Expect

Vienna’s markets are spread throughout the city, with key spots being Rathausplatz and Belvedere Palace. One of my favourites is at Maria Theresien Square, between the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Art. I’ve always enjoyed it for its proximity to the Museums Quarter, where you’ll find great cafes, bars, and a mix of traditional and contemporary eateries.

Austrian Specialties

  • Punsch and Glühwein: The essential market drinks. Punsch is a spiced fruit punch, sometimes with rum or brandy, while Glühwein is mulled wine with spices. Each market has its own collectible mug.
  • Apfelstrudel: A classic Viennese pastry filled with tart apples, cinnamon, raisins, and breadcrumbs.
  • Bratkartoffeln: Sliced potatoes fried until crisp, often served with onions and spices.
  • Waffeln: Freshly made waffles typically topped with whipped cream, fruit, and icing sugar.
  • Vanillekipferl: Crescent-shaped biscuits infused with vanilla and dusted with icing sugar.
  • Bauernkrapfen: Fluffy rings of deep-fried dough, similar to doughnuts, traditionally coated in icing sugar and served warm.

What to Buy

  • Glass Ornaments: Delicate, hand-blown ornaments that make a great gift or tree decoration.
  • Wooden Toys: Handcrafted toys, dollhouses, games, and decorative items.
  • Winter Wear: Cosy scarves, gloves, and hats. Spittelberg is particularly good for textiles.
  • Sweets and Pastries: Lebkuchen, Mozart balls, and vanillekipferl, often packaged in decorative tins.
  • Viennese Porcelain: Fine porcelain plates, cups, and decorative pieces.
  • Austrian Wine and Spirits: Locally produced wines and schnapps, often packaged for gifting.
Vienna Town Hall with Christmas lights and snow.

Sustainable Travel Tips

  • Public transport: Vienna’s tram, bus, and underground network is excellent. Walking is easy too, as the city centre is compact and most markets are close together.
  • Eco-friendly hotels: Several Vienna hotels focus on sustainability with renewable energy and locally sourced food.
  • Order sensibly: It’s tempting to try everything, but ordering smaller portions at market stalls helps reduce food waste.
  • Plant-based options: Vegetarian and vegan choices are widely available, particularly in the inner city districts and at Art Advent on Karlsplatz.
