Funky Xmas Market 2026: Unique Amsterdam in December

Last Updated: 1 July 2026
No Comments

If you’ve had enough of traditional wooden chalets and Glühwein, the Funky Xmas Market at Amsterdam’s Westergas cultural park is the antidote. This one-day event, a seasonal spin-off of the popular Sunday Market, fills a converted gasworks complex with independent designers, vintage dealers and street food vendors selling everything from vegan loaded fries to craft gin.

Location and Times

Location: Westergasfabriek.
Opening time: 12pm to 6pm.

Travel and Accommodation

Public transport: Bus and tram stop: Van Hallstraat or Van L.Stirumstraat.
How to get there: Westergas is a 30-minute walk from Amsterdam Centraal. Tram #3 stops close by and a number of buses stop at the door.
Parking: Please take public transport to help limit congestion. Q-Park Westergasfabriek is nearby.
Where to stay: Mr Jordaan is relatively close to Westergas, but you would most likely need to get public transport to the Xmas market. I wouldn’t stay near Westergas as there isn’t much to do in that area.

Amenities and Attractions

Admission: Free.
Reason to visit: Cultural events, food trucks and handmade gifts.

Dietary Options

Vegetarian: Plenty of options.
Vegan: Plenty of options.
Gluten-free: Some available. Ask individual vendors, but beware of cross-contamination.

Accessibility

Accessible: Yes.
Pet-friendly: Yes, but not recommended during busy periods.

Where to Stay

The Jordaan district is an excellent area to stay in Amsterdam. It’s outside the busy centre but still close to Westergas and other attractions. This neighbourhood has a mix of shops, cafes, and scenic canals.

Mr Jordaan is an excellent boutique hotel option in this area.

What is a Funky Xmas?

The Westergasfabriek is a dynamic event space that showcases Dutch culture, music, and cuisine. Many events take place throughout the year, one of the most popular being the Sunday Market, which becomes Funky for one day in December.

There are food trucks, fashion boutiques, interior design decor, vintage items and artwork. Special stages, such as the Podium and Markttheater, feature music and other forms of entertainment.

Responsible Travel Tips

  • Eco-Friendly Hotels: Amsterdam has numerous hotels that operate on renewable energy.
  • Food Waste: To minimise waste, buy smaller portions to sample and share. Don’t hesitate to ask for a takeaway box for leftovers.
  • Ethical Consumption: The temptation to make impulsive purchases can be high. However, try to limit your purchases to items you really need or will use frequently.
  • Sustainable Food: When eating out, opt for plant-based options that have a lower environmental impact.
  • Transport: Amsterdam is a compact city, making it easy to get around on foot or by bike. Public transport is another good option, and trams frequently run to popular locations like the Westergas venue. Limit your use of taxis and rideshares, as they contribute significantly to carbon emissions.
