Dusseldorf Christmas Market 2026: Old Town Markets Until 30 December

Last Updated: 1 July 2026
2 Comments

Düsseldorf’s Altstadt is nicknamed die längste Theke der Welt (the longest bar in the world) thanks to over 300 pubs crammed into half a square mile. In winter, the Dusseldorf Christmas Market extends this energy across multiple themed markets that wind through the Old Town and along the Rhine, each with its own personality. Add a Japanese quarter, a serious Altbier brewing scene, and markets that stay open until 30th December, and you’ve got one of the more distinctive festive experiences in the Rhineland.

Convenient Hotels

I suggest staying at the central Ruby Luna Hotel. If you’re comfortable walking, it’s less than 10 minutes to the main events and the shops at Königsallee on the canal. I’ve stayed at several Ruby hotels in Germany and Austria; they’re always clean, comfortable, and great value for money.

Recommended Tours

Indulge your sweet tooth with this popular walking tour, which includes the German tradition of enjoying afternoon coffee and cake. If your interests lean towards brewing, a Brewery Tour could perfectly round off your visit.

Beyond the Old Town, MedienHafen is one of the city’s most vibrant districts. This harbour and warehouse area is home to the State Parliament, Rhine Tower, and Gehry Buildings. A guided MedienHafen tour can give you an insight into this area.

Visitor Feedback Header

Visitor Feedback

What Visitors Loved

  • The walkability is Düsseldorf’s biggest advantage. All the markets sit within a few minutes of each other, making it easy to visit every one in a single afternoon or evening.
  • Several visitors rate Düsseldorf above Cologne for value and atmosphere. The Handwerker Markt (Artisan Market) in front of the Rathaus consistently earns praise for its handmade crafts, live artisan demonstrations, and the hand-carved olive wood Nativity scene.
  • The food variety impresses, particularly the mix of Rhineland specialities and international options. Flammlachs (flame-grilled salmon) and Reibekuchen (potato pancakes) are the most frequently recommended items.
  • Staying open until 30th December is a genuine advantage for visitors who can’t travel before Christmas. Multiple reviewers mention this as a deciding factor.

Common Complaints

  • Weekend crowds, especially Saturday afternoons, are the most consistent negative. Several visitors describe the Altstadt markets as near-impossible to navigate on peak days, with shoulder-to-shoulder congestion making it hard to reach stalls or order food.
  • The Schadowplatz and Kö-Lichter markets feel more commercial and less distinctive compared to the Handwerker Markt and Altstadt markets. Some visitors note that stalls away from the Old Town lean towards generic tourist products.
  • Families with young children find the city centre markets challenging due to cobblestones, tight spaces, and the predominantly adult atmosphere. Local parents recommend the Benrath Palace or Kaiserswerth markets for a calmer experience.

The Bottom Line

Düsseldorf is an underrated destination that rewards visitors who go beyond the main Altstadt thoroughfare. Visit on a weekday evening for the best experience, and make time for the Handwerker Markt and a Glühwein along the Rhine promenade.

List of Markets

  • Altstadt Markt – The main market on Flinger Straße in the heart of the Old Town, where stalls are designed to resemble historic Düsseldorf Bürgerhäuser (townhouses). The towering Weihnachtspyramide (Christmas pyramid) opposite Carsch-Haus features the Radschläger (cartwheeler), the city’s emblem, at the top.
  • Handwerker Markt – The Artisan Market on Marktplatz in front of the Renaissance-style Rathaus (Town Hall). Smaller and more traditional, with live craft demonstrations including glass-blowing and wood carving. The hand-carved olive wood Nativity scene is a centrepiece.
  • Schadow-Markt – Follows Schadowstraße shopping street, passing the Tritonenbrunnen fountain and connecting to the shopping precinct.
  • Roncalli Market – On Carlsplatz, created in cooperation with the Roncalli Circus, featuring Art Nouveau-inspired glass houses and historic food trucks along the Rhine promenade.

What to Expect

Düsseldorf’s central markets are all within easy walking distance, forming a trail through the city from the Rhine riverfront into the Old Town and along Königsallee. The Altstadt Markt is the largest, stretching along Flinger Straße and Marktstraße.

Food header.

Food Specialties

  • Himmel und Ääd (Heaven and Earth): A Rhineland classic of Blutwurst (blood sausage), mashed potato, and applesauce.
  • Reibekuchen/Rievkooche: Crispy potato pancakes served with Apfelmus (applesauce), a Rhineland street food staple.
  • Düsseldorfer Senfrostbraten: Roast beef marinated in Düsseldorf’s famous mustard, grilled and served with potatoes and cabbage.
  • Flammlachs: Whole salmon fillets grilled on planks over open fire, a visitor favourite at the markets.
  • Killepitsch: Düsseldorf’s signature herbal liqueur, made from 98 herbs, berries, and fruits. Try it at Et Kabüffke in the Altstadt, where it’s served through a street-facing window.

At the Market Stalls

  • Altbier: Düsseldorf’s copper-coloured, top-fermented beer, brewed in the city since the 1800s. Served in small 250ml Becher glasses from breweries like Uerige, Füchschen, and Zum Schlüssel. Look for Füchschen Weihnachtsbier (Christmas beer) at the markets.
  • Glühwein: The winter classic. Mugs require a deposit of a few euros, which you can forfeit to keep the mug as a souvenir. Also try Feuerzangenbowle (flaming rum punch) and Eierpunsch (egg punch).
  • Flammkuchen: Thin, crispy Alsatian flatbread with crème fraîche and various toppings.
  • Champignons mit Knoblauchsoße: Mushrooms in garlic sauce, a popular vegetarian option.
Gifts header.

What to Buy

  • Düsseldorfer Senf (Mustard): Locally produced mustard in distinctive earthenware pots from specialists like Düsseldorfer Senfladen on Berger Straße.
  • Altbier: Bottled local beer, perfect for gifting. Uerige and Füchschen are the most recognised labels.
  • Handcrafted Glass Baubles: Hand-blown at the Handwerker Markt, where you can watch artisans work.
  • Christmas Pyramids (Weihnachtspyramiden): Traditional tiered wooden carousels powered by candle heat, a classic German decoration.
  • German Beer Steins: Traditional ceramic mugs with pewter lids.
Dusseldorf Canal with snow.

Sustainable Travel Tips

  • Public transport: Düsseldorf’s tram, bus, and underground network covers the entire city centre. Consider a DüsseldorfCard for unlimited transport plus museum discounts.
  • Support artisans: The Handwerker Markt specialises in goods made by local craftspeople, so your purchases go directly to the makers.
  • Local beer: Choose Altbier from the Altstadt breweries over imported alternatives to support the city’s brewing tradition.

They’re usually around the same dates. So Dusseldorf will probably be from mid-November until the end of December. Most other markets start on the last week of November until Christmas Eve.
