Klagenfurt Christmas Market 2026: Weihnachtsmarkt Dates

The skull that gave Klagenfurt its dragon came out of a quarry in 1335, and the city took it as proof that the beast from the old legend had been real. It was a woolly rhinoceros, identified five centuries too late to spoil anything. The Klagenfurt Christmas Market has the same Carinthian character, more local than touristy, with Slovenian and Italian influences running through the food.

Travel tips: Villach pairs well by train at 25 minutes, and it has the ice rink Klagenfurt doesn’t. Graz is 40 minutues away on the new Koralmbahn. Ljubjliana is two hours and where I recommend staying.

What Visitors Loved

• The setting is the reason to visit. Around 60 stalls circle a Renaissance square with the Lindwurm at the centre and a full-size tree behind it, and visitors consistently rate the atmosphere above the shopping.
• It reads as a local market rather than a tourist one, filled with Carinthians meeting after work.
• Families get more than they expect. The children’s programme has grown to include a petting zoo, pony rides, a mini train and a carousel.
• Hafenknistern at the Lendhafen wins over people who find the main market too busy, mostly for the fire bowls and the reflections on the canal.

Common Complaints

• It is small, and anyone arriving from Vienna or Salzburg says so. An hour covers the whole thing comfortably.
• The craft quality is uneven. Genuine carvers and knitters sit next to stalls selling imported goods.
• The city itself doesn’t support a long winter visit, which catches out people who booked several nights.
• The Domplatz market only opens Thursday to Sunday, so midweek visitors turn up to an empty square.

The Bottom Line

Klagenfurt is a good market and a short one, best treated as an evening rather than a destination in its own right. Come after dark, pair it with the Lendhafen and one of the Wörthersee lakeside markets, and you have a full day without needing to fill a weekend.

Christkindlmarkt

There are three markets to know about. The main Christkindlmarkt is on Neuer Platz; a smaller one is on Domplatz; and Hafenknistern is down at the Lendhafen, where the stalls line the Lendkanal with open fire bowls and live music. The choral Stiller Advent runs alongside them in the Landhaushof courtyard.

Klagenfurt works best as a day trip. There isn’t a great deal to fill a weekend here, unlike Ljubljana, which rewards a longer stay.

Silvestermarkt

The Christkindlmarkt does not simply end on Christmas Eve. The same stalls on Neuer Platz reopen as the Silvestermarkt to see the year out, with live music each evening and a stronger drinking crowd than the Advent market draws.

Two nights stand out. Bauernsilvester on 30th December is the local New Year’s Eve, held a day early, and 31st December runs a Silvester Open Air with a live band through the countdown. The Großeltern-Enkel-Tag on the 31st offers free admission to the children’s rides in the afternoon.

Regional Specialties

• Kärntner Kasnudeln: large half-moon dumplings filled with curd cheese, potato and mint, sealed by hand along the edge in a crimped pattern called the Krendl.
• Reindling: Carinthian yeast cake baked in a ring tin and rolled with cinnamon, sugar and raisins.
• Maischalan: a barley and pork speciality from Carinthian butchers, closer to haggis than to anything else in Austria.
• Kletzenbrot: dense fruit bread made with dried pears (Kletzen), nuts and spices. The fruit is soaked in rum or schnapps weeks ahead, though the alcohol bakes off.
• Carp Wiener Art: a Klagenfurt tradition of crumbed and fried carp, prepared like a schnitzel but with fish instead of veal.
• Krautfleckerl: sautéed cabbage with caramelised onions and square pasta, the standard vegetarian order.
• Vanillekipferl: crescent biscuits made with ground almonds or hazelnuts, dusted heavily in icing sugar.

Food at the Stalls

• Glühwein and Punsch: Austrian markets serve both. Punsch is fruitier, often rum-based, and usually the better choice.
• Käsekrainer: pork sausage studded with melting cheese, named after Carniola across the Slovenian border.
• Maroni: roasted chestnuts, sold by weight in paper cones.
• Gebrannte Mandeln: almonds roasted in caramelised sugar, the smell you notice before you see the market.
• Bauernkrapfen: ring-shaped fried pastries, thin in the middle and thick at the rim, dusted with sugar.
• Lebkuchen: gingerbread, often heart-shaped and iced with a message.
• Feuerzangenbowle: a rum-soaked sugarloaf set alight above a bowl of mulled wine.

Gifts and Souvenirs

• Krippenfiguren: hand-carved nativity figures, the single strongest craft category at this market.
• Mundgeblasene Christbaumkugeln: mouth-blown glass baubles, sold by the makers rather than by resellers.
• Hand-knitted wool: scarves, hats and jackets knitted by Carinthian stallholders, often on the needles while they serve you.
• Carinthian honey: wildflower and forest varieties from regional beekeepers.
• Kürbiskernöl: dark green pumpkin seed oil with a nutty flavour, bottled locally.
• Carinthian lavender: oils, soaps and candles made from lavender grown in the region.
• Herbal tinctures and incense: a small but consistent presence, sold alongside handmade ceramics.

Sustainability

Klagenfurt is the only Austrian city in the EU Cities Mission, the programme supporting 112 European cities in reaching climate neutrality by 2030. It holds the EU Cities Mission Label and reached the European Green Capital Award finals.

• Arrive by train: the Koralmbahn now links Graz to Klagenfurt in 41 minutes, and Villach is 25 minutes away. Flying into Klagenfurt Airport for a market that takes an evening is hard to justify.
• Use the buses: lines B and C run every 10 minutes and the market is 6 minutes from the Hauptbahnhof. The ÖBB Freizeit-Ticket Kärnten covers the region for a flat weekend day rate.
• Try nextbike: the city bike share has expanded steadily beyond the city boundary and covers the run out to the lake.
• Buy from the makers: the carvers, glass blowers and knitters at Neuer Platz sell their own work. Stalls reselling imported stock sit alongside them, and the difference is visible if you look at the stock.
• Shop the Biomarkt: organic Carinthian farmers trade every Friday from 6am to 1pm in Lidmanskygasse, just south of the Benediktinermarkt.
• Eat Carinthian: Kasnudeln, Reindling and Kletzenbrot are all made from ingredients grown within the region, which is not true of most market food.
• Stay in hotels rather than short-stay apartments: apartment stock removes affordable housing from residents, a pressure Klagenfurt shares with every lake town on the Wörthersee.
• Skate on the Lendkanal instead: when it freezes, the Eislaufverein Wörthersee maintains roughly 1.5km of natural ice through the middle of the city. No refrigeration, no energy cost.
• Stay longer, see less: Klagenfurt sits within reach of Velden, Maria Wörth, Pörtschach and Villach by boat, bus and train, so one base covers a week of Advent markets without a car.
