The Klagenfurt Christmas Market wraps around the Lindwurm, a 16th-century dragon fountain that’s been the city’s symbol for over 400 years. It’s a relaxed, compact market with a strong Carinthian character, and the wider Wörthersee region adds Advent boat cruises and lakeside markets, making it worth more than a quick stop.

Convenient Hotels
The historic centre of Klagenfurt is located inland from Lake Wörthersee and is known as Innere Stadt. This is where you’ll most likely want to stay, as there are many sights and places to eat out, and it’s within walking distance of the winter market.
I visited Klagenfurt on a day trip from Ljubljana, so I can’t make a personal hotel recommendation. But I suggest staying at Hotel Sandwirth. It’s a 2-minute walk to Neuer Platz, while Domplatz is another 3 minutes.
You can find a list of other hotels in Klagenfurt that cover all budgets.

Christkindlmarkt Klagenfurt
Klagenfurt is decorated with lights from the historic centre to the lake during the entire Advent period. There are two main winter markets in Klagenfurt: the main market on Neuer Platz and a smaller market on Domplatz, as well as the musical Peaceful Advent event.
Great as a day trip, as there isn’t much to do for visitors, unlike Ljubljana, which is amazing for longer stays.

- Vanillekipferl – Crescent-shaped biscuits flavoured with vanilla and dusted with icing sugar. Made with ground almonds or hazelnuts for a delicate, melt-in-the-mouth texture.
- Carp ‘Wiener Art’ – A Klagenfurt tradition featuring crumbed and fried carp prepared Viennese-style, similar to Wiener schnitzel but using fish instead of veal.
- Krautfleckerl – Cabbage with pasta. This simple but comforting vegetarian dish combines sautéed cabbage with caramelised onions and hearty pasta.
- Glühwein – Warming mulled wine made from red wine heated with spices including cinnamon, cloves, star anise and citrus. Non-alcoholic versions available.
