Winter in Vancouver usually means rain, so there’s something cheeky about a village where snow falls on cue every half hour. The Vancouver Christmas Market leans into its German roots, from glühwein poured at a three-storey pyramid to carved nutcrackers and paper stars. It’s more of a night out than a shopping trip, and it’s at its best once the wooden huts are lit up against the water.

Convenient Places to Stay

Although the event is located at Canada Place, I suggest staying in a neighbourhood with more things to do and a wider variety of places to eat out, such as Gastown, where the Victorian Hotel is good value for money.

Otherwise, you might like the Paradox Hotel in the convenient Coal Harbour district.

What Visitors Loved

• The waterfront setting after dark wins people over, with the lit huts against the harbour, and plenty of visitors reckon arriving around 4pm gets you both daylight and the lights coming on.
• The hearty German food gets the warmest reviews, especially the schnitzel and spätzle, and the fried squid has more fans than you’d expect.
• Weekday afternoons feel different, with room to wander and shorter queues at the huts.
• Families like that the carousel is included in the ticket, and early-bird tickets are seen as good value.

Common Complaints

• Paying to get in and then paying for every plate and drink adds up quickly, and locals often point visitors to the free market across the harbour in North Vancouver instead.
• Weekend evenings and the last fortnight before Christmas bring long lines at the gate and at the busiest food huts, so go early in the season or on a weekday.
• Seating is hard to find once it’s busy, so grab a spot under cover when one comes free.
• Glühwein comes in a paper cup and cools fast, and the collectible mug costs extra.
• Not everyone’s convinced by the authenticity: some find a few dishes reheated and the village a bit like a theme park next to the markets in Germany.

What to Expect

Expect a small German village, not a row of stalls. More than 90 wooden huts line the alleys, painted village facades frame the entrance, and the food has its own street: Gourmetstrasse. On one side, there’s the harbour, the floatplanes and the North Shore mountains; on the other, the glass towers of downtown.

An evening here is less about ticking off huts and more about finding a seat by a fire pit with a glühwein and staying put. Bring a warm, waterproof layer, because the plaza sits right on Burrard Inlet and the wind off the water finds you.

• Christmas Pyramid: The three-storey centrepiece, with live music on the Flying Stage on its upper level.
• Walk-through Christmas tree: A 35-foot tree you can step right inside.
• Christmas Carousel: At the entrance; rides are included in your ticket.
• Snow showers: Fake snow drifts down over the village every 30 minutes.
• Alpen Haus: A covered spot to sit, drink and thaw out between huts.
• Santa’s Workshop: Beside the Alpen Haus, where kids can meet Santa and write him a letter.
• Village Passport: Kids pick one up at the gate and follow it from stop to stop around the village.
• Lovers’ Lane: A tunnel of lights hung with mistletoe, where couples add their names.
• Wishing Forest: A new woodland tucked into the alleys, where you leave a wish written on a wooden ornament.
• Secret Wall Cocktail Hut: Ring the bell near the Pyramid and either Santa or the Grinch hands your drink through a hidden window.
• Fire Pit Lounge: Open fires under string lights, and the warmest seats in the market.

Food Specialties

• Bratwurst: Grilled at the Continental Brathaus, where two German master sausage makers make the sausages.
• Schnitzel: Fried in front of you and served with brown gravy and cold potato salad.
• Kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes): Grated potato fried until crisp, sold at the same hut as the spiral-cut hurricane potatoes on a stick.
• Raclette: Swiss cheese melted and scraped straight onto your plate. Go for it over potatoes rather than bread.
• Perogies: Potato and cheddar dumplings piled with sauerkraut, fried onions and kielbasa, a nod to the Ukrainian Canadians who made them a national favourite.
• Fried squid: Hardly Bavarian, but the Squid Feast hut has built up a loyal following.

At the Market Stalls

• Glühwein (mulled wine): Poured at the Pyramid bar to the market’s own recipe, with Kinderpunsch (a spiced, alcohol-free fruit punch) for kids and drivers.
• Chimney cake: Sweet dough wound around a spit and roasted until the sugar caramelises, from the Transylvanian Chimney Cakes hut.
• Gingerbread: Cookies shaped like little figures and houses from the Gingerbread Haus.
• Dutch mini pancakes: Small, puffy pancakes from the Pancake & Waffle Haus, which also does croffles (croissant dough pressed in a waffle iron).
• Coffee in an edible cup: Exactly what it sounds like, and the cup is the best part.

What to Buy

• The collectible mug: This year’s is shaped like a Christmas tree and hand-illustrated with Vancouver landmarks, and it’s the easiest souvenir to carry home.
• Herrnhut stars: Many-pointed paper and plastic stars handmade in Saxony that light up from inside like a lantern.
• Nutcrackers and incense smokers: Carved wooden figures in the Ore Mountains tradition, along with German incense cones to go in them.
• Glass and wooden ornaments: Traditional German tree decorations from a hut that sells nothing else.
• BC food gifts: Craft cider made from Okanagan fruit, raw honey and hand-painted artisan chocolates.
• Handmade woollens and leather: Alpaca hats and toys, crocheted gifts, needle-felted animals and handmade leather goods.

Sustainable Travel Tips

• Ride to Waterfront Station: The Canada Line, Expo Line, SeaBus and West Coast Express all meet at Waterfront Station, a short walk from the market gates.
• Walk in along the seawall: The Coal Harbour stretch of the seawall is a flat, car-free path from Stanley Park and the West End to the market, lovely at dusk.
• Cross to the Shipyards by SeaBus: The passenger ferry reaches Lonsdale Quay in about 12 minutes, and the free Shipyards Christmas Market, with its outdoor rink, has run a short walk away in recent seasons.
