Berat Christmas Market 2026: Open November to Epiphany

Albania barely registers as a winter destination, and what attention it does get tends to go to Tirana. The Berat Christmas Market makes a quieter case, a run of artisan stalls beneath a hillside of white Ottoman houses, with local wine behind the mulled wine and a giant illuminated bear you cannot miss. I’ve spent months in this city, and it stays calm enough through the day that you’ll often have the stalls almost to yourself.

Convenient Hotels

Berat is a tiny city with many family-owned hotels and guesthouses. The beautiful old stone houses overlook Berat from the district known as Mangalem. This is the area where you’ll most likely want to stay, as it is so unique and close to everything. Note that it’s not accessible if you have restricted mobility, in which case you may want to stay on the main street.

I recommend staying at Bujtina Kodiket Guesthouse. I’ve met the owner and been inside this lovingly restored guesthouse. The stone walls, exposed timber beams and cobblestone courtyard are typical of this style of historic house.

What Visitors Loved

• The calm is the whole point. Visitors arriving from Tirana or from bigger European markets consistently describe Berat as unhurried, with no queues and no crush.
• The setting does the heavy lifting, with stalls sitting below the white facades of Mangalem, the castle above and Mount Tomorr usually carrying snow behind it.
• Crafts draw better feedback than the food, with wood, glass and textile work from local makers rather than mass-produced souvenirs.
• Weekend evenings bring live music and there are DJ sets through the week, so the boulevard stays busy after dark even in the off season.

Common Complaints

• It is small. Anyone expecting German-market scale will walk the whole thing in fifteen minutes, and daytime can feel sleepy.
• December is Berat’s wettest month with highs around 10 to 12 degrees, and the market is entirely outdoors with no cover.
• The cobbled lanes of Mangalem and the climb to the castle are hard going when wet, and not possible at all with a wheelchair or a pram.
• Winter is low season across Albania, so some restaurants and guesthouses cut their hours or close entirely. Check before you book.

The Bottom Line

Nobody should fly to Albania for this market alone, but if you’re already in the country over winter it turns an excellent town into a festive one. Come on a Friday or Saturday evening when the live music is on and the xhiro fills the boulevard, and stay two nights so you get the castle and Gorica in daylight.

Christmas in Berat

Give yourself a full day for the two old quarters. Mangalem stacks up the hillside below the castle in rows of white Ottoman houses, and Gorica sits directly opposite across the river. The nickname City of a Thousand Windows comes from the way those facades line up when you look back from the Gorica side, which is where I’d go for photos.

Berat Castle is still a lived-in neighbourhood with families inside the walls, and the Onufri National Iconographic Museum up there holds a serious collection of Byzantine and Albanian icons. Winter light on the deep reds Onufri was known for is worth the climb on its own.

In the evening, join the xhiro, the daily promenade where the whole town walks before dinner. This is when the market wakes up. There are plenty of benches and tables set out in front of the stalls, so you can sit down with a mulled wine rather than shuffle past in a queue.

Food Specialties

• Tavë kosi: baked lamb under a yoghurt and egg custard, Albania’s signature dish and better ordered at a restaurant than a stall.
• Byrek: flaky pastry pie, usually spinach and cheese, though leek and plain cheese versions are common.
• Qebapa: small grilled beef or lamb sausages served with bread and raw onion.
• Flija: layers of pancake batter cooked slowly over an open flame and served with yoghurt and honey.
• Pite me mish: savoury meat pie, a winter staple across the region.
• Petulla: fried dough eaten with honey, jam or salted cheese.
• Embëlsira: the catch-all term for Albanian sweets, including trileçe, a sponge soaked in three milks, and sheqerpare, a syrup-soaked biscuit.
• Baklava and kadaif: two takes on phyllo and nuts, one built in sheets, the other in shredded pastry.
• Raki: fruit brandy, usually grape, poured in small glasses at any hour of the day.
• Berat wine: the vineyards around Roshnik and the Osum valley grow native varieties like Shesh i Bardhë and Shesh i Zi, so the mulled wine here is made from something decent for once.

• Shop mindfully. Only purchase what you really need.
• Walk, cycle, and use public transport to get around.
• Avoid using plastic or buying items made or packaged with plastic.
