Korca Christmas Market 2026: Most Beautiful in Albania

Last Updated: 18 August 2026
No Comments

Most of the crowd at the Korca Christmas Market has driven in from Tirana or Pogradec rather than flown in from abroad, and that is exactly what makes it worth the trip. Sitting high on a plateau ringed by mountains, this is one of the few Albanian cities with a real chance of snow in December, and the whole month plays out as a civic celebration rather than a tourist attraction.

Convenient Hotels

There are many excellent hotels in Korca. I’ve stayed in both the Old Bazaar area and on Bulevardi Republika, and either would be a good choice. To be closest to the festivities, I would stay at Trésor Art Boutique Hotel, as it’s centrally located and housed in a beautifully restored historic house.

If you want to be near the Old Bazaar and all its bars and restaurants, Hani i Pazarit is an excellent choice. It’s right in the bazaar area, and the hotel is in a lovely old stone building.

Recommended Tours

I highly recommend taking this city tour of Korca as an introduction to the city’s most significant landmarks and attractions. During a city tour, you’ll see iconic sites such as the Resurrection Cathedral, Old Bazaar and the Mirahori Mosque.

Visitor Feedback

What Visitors Loved

  • The crowd is almost entirely Albanian, and visitors consistently describe the atmosphere as a community celebration rather than a tourist event.
  • The light switch-on in early December draws thousands into the square for a free concert, and it is the night most people single out.
  • Snow is genuinely likely here, and repeat visitors pair the market with the ski village of Dardhë or the nearby mountain villages.
  • Value comes up constantly. Food, drinks and hotels cost a fraction of what a weekend in the German or Austrian market would cost.

Common Complaints

  • Anyone arriving expecting a German or Austrian style market will be let down. This is a modest run of stalls attached to a much bigger city wide programme of concerts and events.
  • Hotels sell out early. The city has reported being fully booked across the holiday weekends, so leaving accommodation late rarely works.
  • Getting there takes effort. There is no train, and the roads in from Tirana or Berat cross mountain passes that slow right down in bad weather.
  • Bring cash. Plenty of stalls and smaller venues still do not take cards.

The Bottom Line

Korça is worth the drive if you want an Albanian celebration rather than a copy of a German market, and the mountain setting with a real chance of snow is what sets it apart. Book a room well before December, aim for the weekend of the light switch on, and treat the concerts, theatre and bazaar as the main event with the stalls as a bonus.

What to expect text header image

Christmas in Korca

Korça sits in south eastern Albania, an hour from Lake Prespa and close to the Greek border. Winter is properly cold here, which is why Albanians treat the city as the country’s festive capital while the coast shuts down for the season.

Bulevardi Republika is the spine of the city, lined with cafes and restaurants busy with students and young workers, and the bars and clubs behind it keep going late. At the other end of town, the restored Pazari i Vjetër (Old Bazaar) holds boutique shops, bakeries and a mix of traditional and modern restaurants. It is the nicer half of town to spend an evening in, and there are some lovely places to stay.

There is more here than eating and drinking. The Muzeu Kombëtar i Artit Mesjetar (National Museum of Medieval Art) holds thousands of Orthodox icons and religious artefacts, and the ski village of Dardhë is a short drive up into the mountains once the snow arrives.

Regional Specialties

  • Lakror: a thin leek pie baked between metal trays over embers, sold by the slice and hard to find outside Korça.
  • Birra Korça: brewed in the city since 1928, Albania’s best known beer and poured everywhere from the bazaar to the stalls.
  • Qifqi: deep fried rice balls flavoured with mint and egg, crisp outside and soft in the middle.
  • Tave kosi: baked lamb under a set yoghurt and egg topping. Vegetarians should ask for tave kosi me kërpudha, made with mushrooms.
  • Byrek me spinaq: filo pie filled with spinach, feta, onion and herbs, sold by the slice in every bakery.
  • Sheqerpare: small semolina biscuits baked golden then soaked in syrup.
  • Baklava: layered filo, chopped walnuts and syrup, and the sweet most Albanian families make at home for Christmas Eve.
  • Flija: layered batter cooked in stages under a lid, served with honey or jam.

At the Market Stalls

  • Qebapa: grilled fingers of minced beef or lamb, served with bread, raw onion and yoghurt.
  • Petulla: fried dough eaten hot, dusted with sugar or topped with cream, honey or jam.
  • Raki: powerful fruit brandy, usually grape or plum, poured to keep the cold out.

Sustainability Tips

  • Buy from makers: the stalls and bazaar shops sell handmade wood, wool and textiles, so look for the artisans rather than imported souvenirs.
  • Walk everywhere: the centre is compact and the boulevard is pedestrianised, so there is no reason to drive.
  • Eat local: Trifecta does good vegetarian and vegan dishes, and Organic Cafe serves organic coffee and homemade desserts.
  • Skip single use plastic: bring a refillable bottle and back the businesses using sustainable packaging.
  • Spread your spending: the city museums, a performance at the Andon Zako Çajupi theatre or an exhibition at the cultural centre all put money beyond the main square.
