Albania makes most people think of beaches, but Pogradec sits over 700 metres up on a lake it shares with North Macedonia, where snow on the surrounding ridges is a genuine possibility in December. The Pogradec Christmas Market is small by European standards, and honestly, the lake does more of the work than the stalls do.

Convenient Hotels
Pogradec is small and safe. Stay near Sheshi Odeoni, the central waterfront square, or within a 10-minute walk of it, where the cafes, restaurants and lake views are.
One of the nicest places to stay is Boutique Hotel Kooperativa. It’s approximately 8 minutes from the festive events and only a short distance to the lake.
You might find hotels closer, but it’s worth staying an extra hundred metres away for a considerably nicer place.
Interesting Tours
There aren’t many tours of Pogradec that you can book online, so the best option is to ask at your hotel upon arrival. They will be able to arrange a private tour for you. However, there are tours of nearby Ohrid that are well worth taking. Ohrid is one of the prettiest historic cities in the Balkans, and it’s only a short distance from Pogradec, across the border in North Macedonia.

Visitor Feedback
What Visitors Loved
- The lake in winter is the recurring theme. Still, deep blue water with snow on the ridges behind it, and sunsets that regular visitors rate above the summer ones.
- Emptiness is the drawcard. Off season visitors describe having the waterfront promenade almost to themselves, the exact opposite of the July crush.
- Koran trout comes up in nearly every account, usually eaten at one of the restaurants built out over the water.
- Cost is consistently praised. December is the cheapest stretch of the Albanian calendar, and Pogradec is inexpensive even by Albanian standards.
Common Complaints
- The market is genuinely small. Anyone arriving with German or Austrian markets in mind finds a modest run of stalls and a lit boulevard rather than a full event.
- Winter closures catch people out. Plenty of hotels, guesthouses and lakeside restaurants shut or cut their hours outside the festive fortnight, so check before you book.
- It is colder than visitors expect. At this altitude it runs several degrees colder and damper than Tirana or the coast, and heating in older buildings is unreliable.
- Stalls rarely take cards. Carry lek rather than assuming euros will be accepted.
The Bottom Line
Come for Lake Ohrid in winter and treat the market as a bonus rather than the reason for the trip. If you want a bigger festive programme, pair Pogradec with Korça, which goes all out in December, or cross the border into Ohrid for the day.

What to Expect
Winter here is the opposite of summer. The lake still dominates, but the mountains behind the town put skiing and snowboarding within reach, and the crowds that fill the shoreline in July are gone entirely. The main boulevard is strung with lights around a decorated tree, and each evening people walk it end to end for the xhiro, the Albanian evening stroll that doubles as catching up with friends and family.
Food Specialties
- Tavë korani: koran trout from Lake Ohrid, baked rather than grilled, and the dish the town is known for.
- Buti wine: red wine from Buti, a village near Pogradec known for its vineyards.
- Perla and moskat raki: raki is an Albanian grape spirit, and these two varieties are the ones you will be offered around Pogradec.
- Lakror: leek pie baked between thin layers of pastry, a speciality of the wider Korçë region.
- Fërgesë: capsicum and tomato fried down and stirred through feta. A personal favourite, and I make it at home regularly.
- Byrek: savoury phyllo pie filled with vegetables or meat, with regional variations right across the Balkans.
- Qofte: fried patties of minced meat, onion, herbs and spices.
- Kabuni: sweet rice pudding dusted with cinnamon.
- Bakllasë: a walnut dessert, usually eaten with tea or coffee.

I’ve linked to them above, but to be honest, it’s not the greatest site. I’ll write more about the city in the future, but if you’re open to new experiences, just hop on a bus from Tirana and explore when you arrive.
Sustainability Tips
Stay somewhere that conserves resources and looks after its staff. Transparency is limited in Albania, so this is harder than it sounds, even though nearly all of the country’s electricity comes from hydropower.
