Esslingen Christmas Market 2026: 20 Minutes from Stuttgart

Last Updated: 6 October 2026
No Comments

Fire-eaters, jugglers and stilt-walkers do as much of the work as the stalls at the Esslingen Christmas Market. Hundreds of performances run throughout the season, so it feels more like an evening at a fair than a shopping trip. Children get their own corner with a hand-cranked wooden Ferris wheel, and adults can book a hot barrel bath in the medieval bathhouse.

Recommended Tours

Esslingen’s medieval market is what draws people in, and knowing which buildings around it are actually medieval changes how the whole thing reads. The old town walking tour takes ninety minutes through the half-timbered streets. Do it first.

Visitor Feedback

What Visitors Loved

  • Visitors keep coming back to the costumed traders and craftspeople working in front of them, which makes it feel unlike any other market in the region.
  • The street performers get as much praise as the stalls, from jugglers and stilt-walkers to musicians.
  • The food goes well beyond bratwurst, with stick bread and spit-roasted meat often singled out, and vegetarians and vegans are well catered for.
  • The half-timbered old town looks its best once the lights and lanterns are on.

Common Complaints

  • Evenings and weekends get very crowded, and the narrow medieval lanes can feel claustrophobic. Weekday mornings or early afternoons are far calmer, and the Hafenmarkt square is usually less packed.
  • Not every smaller trader takes cards, so carry some cash.

What to expect text header image

What to expect

There are really two markets here. The traditional one fills the market square with over 80 stalls, a nostalgic carousel and a candle workshop, under the twin towers of St Dionysius church. Cross to the Town Hall square and the old harbour market square (Hafenmarkt) and the lighting drops to torches and lanterns, the signs turn to painted wood, and the stallholders are in costume.

In the medieval quarter the crafts happen in front of you: blacksmiths at the anvil, feltmakers, broom makers and glassblowers at work while you watch. There are around 180 stalls in all, and roughly 500 performances on three stages over the season, from jugglers and stilt-walkers to minstrels, storytellers and fire artists.

Families should head for the children’s corner, Zwergenland, with its hand-cranked wooden Ferris wheel and candle making. By the Postmichel fountain there’s a living nativity with donkeys and sheep, and on Advent weekends more than 30 artisans set up a separate craft market a few streets away. For something stranger, the medieval bathhouse rents out steaming barrel baths, which book out, so reserve ahead.

Local specialties header.

Regional Specialties

  • Maultaschen: Swabian pasta parcels filled with minced meat, bread, onions and spinach, served in broth or fried with onion and egg.
  • Käsespätzle: Swabian egg noodles layered with melted cheese and topped with crispy fried onions.
  • Schupfnudeln: Finger-shaped potato noodles pan-fried with sauerkraut and bacon.
Food header.

At the Food Stalls

  • Stick bread (Stockbrot): Dough twisted around a stick and baked over an open fire, sweet or savoury.
  • Mead: Warm honey wine served in ceramic mugs, the medieval quarter’s drink of choice.
  • Apple mulled wine: A fruity alternative to glühwein, from a region known for its orchards.
  • Spit-roasted meats: Suckling pig and venison turned over open fires in the medieval quarter.
  • Feuerzangenbowle: A mulled wine-based drink with a sugarloaf soaked in rum that’s set alight and dripped into the wine below.
  • Cinnamon rolls: Oversized and rolled by hand at the stall.
Gifts header.

What to Buy

  • Hand-forged ironware: Made by the blacksmiths you can watch at work in the medieval quarter.
  • Baskets and brushes: Woven and bound by hand by traditional basket makers and brush makers.
  • Felted wool: Hats and other felt pieces from feltmakers working at their stalls.
  • Leather goods and pottery: Leatherwork and ceramic kitchenware in keeping with the medieval theme.
  • Candles: Make your own at the candle workshop on the traditional market.
  • Local wine: Esslingen’s own vineyards produce Trollinger and Riesling, and local winemakers sell bottles at the market.

Sustainability Tips

  • Keep or return your mug: Mulled wine comes in ceramic mugs bearing the city’s coat of arms rather than disposable cups. Pay the deposit, then hand the mug back for a refund or take it home.
  • Take the S1: The S-Bahn S1 runs from Stuttgart main station to Esslingen in about 20 minutes, and the market’s a 10-minute walk from the station. The car parks fill up at weekends anyway.
  • Stay at Ecoinn: The hotel generates its own electricity from an on-site hydroelectric plant, producing around three times what it uses, and heats its water with a river-water heat pump. It’s held GreenSign’s top level 5 certification.
