Mulhouse Christmas Market 2026: A New Fabric Every Year

Last Updated: 1 October 2026
No Comments

Mulhouse dresses its old centre in a fabric designed for one winter only, hanging it from facades and over the pedestrian streets. It’s a nod to the city’s textile printing past, and it makes the Mulhouse Christmas Market look unlike any other in Alsace. Come after dark, when the lights pick out the pattern, and take a metre or two home as a souvenir.

Recommended Tours

Mulhouse is the Alsatian town the coach circuit skips, so you see it without the crush that clogs Colmar and Riquewihr. A guide who lives there takes you around Place de la Réunion and the streets behind it on a two-hour highlights walk. Leaves your afternoon free for the market.

Visitor Feedback

What Visitors Loved

  • The Christmas fabric ties the whole centre together, and plenty of visitors take a length of it home as a souvenir.
  • There’s room to move. Visitors from abroad often remark on the wide aisles, and anyone arriving from Strasbourg or Colmar notices the easier pace.
  • The sound and light show projected in Square de la Bourse after dark is a highlight for many visitors.
  • Food and drink are fairly priced for Alsace, and hearty local dishes like fleischschnacka and tarte flambée win people over.

Common Complaints

  • Some visitors find it less picturesque than Colmar or the wine villages, since Mulhouse is a working industrial city once you step beyond the market squares.
  • Evenings and weekends get busy, as more locals now come after work rather than during the day.
  • A few travellers reported pickpocketing attempts around the train station, so keep bags closed on the walk in.

The Bottom Line

Mulhouse suits anyone who has done Strasbourg and Colmar and wants the same Alsatian food and crafts with space to enjoy them. Arrive mid-afternoon on a weekday, browse in daylight, then stay on for the light show once it’s dark.

What to expect text header image

What to Expect

The market spreads through the old centre rather than filling one square. Place de la Réunion is the hub, framed by the red sandstone Temple Saint-Étienne and the painted facade of the old town hall. From there the chalets carry on through Place des Cordiers, Place de la Concorde and Place des Victoires, where the big tree stands.

What sets Mulhouse apart is the Christmas fabric (étoffe de Noël), a nod to the textile printing that made the city’s fortune from 1746. Each year a local designer creates a new pattern, drawing on the collections of the Museum of Printed Fabrics, and kilometres of cotton are printed to hang from facades and over the pedestrian streets. The 2026 design, Jardin d’hiver (Winter Garden), is by the Alsatian textile brand Vois là, with holly, fir and pine cones in red, white and green. It’s sold at the Boutique aux étoffes on the first floor of the town hall.

After dark, a sound and light show is projected in Square de la Bourse. Regional trains from Basel, Colmar and Strasbourg make Mulhouse an easy day trip, and the station is within walking distance of the chalets.

Alsatian Specialties

  • Tarte flambée (flammekueche): Thin-crusted Alsatian tart topped with cream, onions and bacon. Vegetarian versions with cheese and vegetables are available.
  • Choucroute with knepfle: Alsatian sauerkraut served with knepfle, small egg dumplings that soak up the juices.
  • Fleischschnacka: Pasta dough rolled around seasoned meat, sliced into spirals like snails and pan-fried.
  • Sausages: Alsatian sausages served in crusty bread with sautéed onions and mustard.
  • Bretzel: The Alsatian soft pretzel, baked fresh in salted and unsalted versions.
  • Kouglof: Sweet Alsatian bread baked with nuts and raisins, dusted with powdered sugar.
  • Bredala: Small Alsatian Christmas biscuits, baked in dozens of shapes and flavours and sold by the bag.
  • Pain d’épices: Spiced honey bread similar to gingerbread, often shaped into festive designs and decorated with icing.
  • Vin chaud: Mulled wine infused with cinnamon, cloves and star anise, served hot.
  • Local cheeses: Regional Alsatian cheeses, including Munster from the Vosges valleys.

Interesting Gift Stalls

  • Christmas fabric: This year’s étoffe by the metre, or made up into tablecloths, table runners and decorations.
  • Alsatian wines: Local bottles including Riesling and Gewürztraminer from the Alsace wine region.
  • Ceramics: Potters sell tableware and ceramic Christmas trees.
  • Alsatian biscuits and pastries: Traditional treats packaged in decorative boxes or tins.
  • Regional cooking ingredients: Alsatian mustard, vinegar and spices in gift-ready containers.
  • Local artwork: Cards created by regional artists, from classic to contemporary designs.

Sustainable Travel Tips

  • An eco-labelled market: The market holds level 2 of the Eco-Manifestations Alsace label, the regional scheme for greener events.
  • Keep or return your cup: Drinks come only in reusable cups, washed by a local ESAT (a sheltered workshop employing people with disabilities). Hand yours back at a drinks chalet or keep it as a souvenir.
  • LED lights on a timer: The 250,000 LEDs across the centre are lit only in the evening, and the illuminations now use around a seventh of the power they once did.
  • Three-stream waste sorting: Rubbish is sorted into three streams, and food scraps and used cooking oil from the chalets are collected, with the organic waste turned into biogas and fertiliser.
  • Mostly Alsatian stalls: Around six in ten craft chalets sell products made in Alsace, and most of the rest come from elsewhere in France.
  • Charity chalet on Place des Victoires: Local charities take turns at the Chalet des associations, so a purchase there goes straight to a Mulhouse cause.
  • Park and ride by tram: The P+Tram car parks at Nouveau Bassin and Université include a return tram ticket for everyone in the car, and trams 1, 2 and 3 all stop at Porte Jeune, a short walk from the market.
