Freiburg Christmas Market 2026: Black Forest Crafts

Last Updated: 6 October 2026
No Comments

Rather than one big square, the Freiburg Christmas Market winds through the old town, and half the fun is drifting from one cluster of stalls to the next. It’s a great place to find regional gifts. Many of them come from the Black Forest just outside town: woven straw slippers, wool hats and wooden toys, including little boats made for the water channels that line the old town streets. Grab a mulled wine before you start browsing, because every stand has its own recipe and it’s worth comparing a few.

Central Hotels

The old town (Altstadt) is the most convenient area to stay in Freiburg, with the stalls, the cathedral and the tram stops all on your doorstep. I recommend the Hotel Rappen due to its popularity and convenient location near the market.

While in Freiburg, you might like to visit the unique Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market in the heart of the Black Forest.

What to Expect

There’s no single main square to tick off here. More than 120 stalls are spread across eight spots in the old town, from Town Hall Square (Rathausplatz) to the Kartoffelmarkt and the lanes around Unterlinden, so a visit becomes a slow walk from one to the next. On Advent Sundays, extra stalls set up along Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse, the main shopping street.

Colombipark is the prettiest corner after dark, with the trees lit up around the little Colombi palace and school choirs and local musicians taking turns through the day. Families tend to head for the children’s bakery on the Kartoffelmarkt, where kids roll out and bake their own biscuits, and there are carousels too. For a quieter moment, St Martin’s Church on Town Hall Square holds short evening sessions of music, words and silence through December.

The market has been an official fixture since 1973, when it opened with just 20 stalls, though a Christmas market was already being held on the cathedral square in the 19th century. Advent Saturdays are by far the busiest days, so a weekday afternoon is much more relaxed.

Local specialties header.

Regional Specialties

  • Lange Rote: Freiburg’s own sausage, long, thin and tender, and usually eaten with a squeeze of mustard. If you only try one thing, make it this.
  • Käsebengel: A baguette filled with melted cheese, a bit like fondue you can carry around the stalls.
  • Flammkuchen: Alsace is just over the Rhine, and its thin, crisp tart topped with crème fraîche and onions is a staple here too.
  • Black Forest ham (Schwarzwälder Schinken): Cured and smoked over fir wood, then sliced thinly to eat on bread or take home.
  • Dampfnudeln: Soft steamed yeast dumplings, served with vanilla sauce or plum compote.
  • Black Forest cake (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte): Chocolate sponge layered with cream, cherries and a good splash of kirsch, the local cherry brandy.
  • Mulled wine (glühwein): Every stand keeps its own recipe, so it’s worth comparing a red and a white at different stalls. Baden is wine country, and you’ll find wine from local growers on offer as well.

Available to Buy

  • Wooden toys: Puzzles, mobiles and the Freiburger Bächleboot, a little wooden boat made for sailing down the water channels that run beside the old town streets.
  • Straw slippers (Strohfinken): Woven straw house slippers, a traditional Black Forest craft and a gift you won’t see at many other markets.
  • Glass ornaments: Blown glass baubles and decorations for the tree, light enough to pack in your hand luggage.
  • Ceramics: Handmade ceramic houses to line up along a windowsill, plus other handmade pottery.
  • Wool and felt: Hats, scarves, gloves and hot water bottle covers, some of them made in the Black Forest.
  • Olive wood nativity sets: Figures and full scenes carved from olive wood in Bethlehem.
  • Leather goods: Wallets and bags in leather tanned with plant extracts rather than chrome.
  • Jewellery made to order: Some stallholders make or adjust silver and amber pieces while you wait.

Sustainable Travel Tips

  • Renewable power: The whole market runs on renewable electricity from Badenova, the regional energy supplier, and every bulb is LED. Lights that aren’t needed switch off automatically at 10pm.
  • Porcelain, not paper: Food comes on reusable porcelain and mulled wine in deposit glasses, all washed on site in mobile dishwashing units. Hand yours back when you’re done, or keep the glass as a souvenir.
  • No plastic at the stalls: Plastic straws, cling film, foil and plastic bags are banned, and any single-use serveware has to be made from corn or bamboo.
  • Take the tram: Bertoldsbrunnen, where four of Freiburg’s five tram lines stop, is a couple of minutes’ walk from Town Hall Square.
