Odense Christmas Market 2026: Hans Christian Andersen

Last Updated: 1 July 2026
No Comments

Few Christmas markets in Europe are built around a single storyteller, but the Odense Christmas Market takes its entire identity from Hans Christian Andersen. Held on the cobblestones where Andersen grew up, with costumed fairy-tale characters wandering between spruce-covered stalls selling æbleskiver and marzipan, it’s a 19th-century Danish experience brought to life each December.

Christmas in Odense

Start your trip in the city’s oldest quarter, close to the house where Hans Christian Andersen was born. The market here is known as the Odense Julemarkedet, and it carries the theme of the renowned fairy-tale writer.

The market is focused on 19th-century Danish traditions and is situated in Odense’s Sortebrødre Torv. You can buy items like wool products and traditional food such as pancakes and waffles, and even encounter characters from Andersen’s stories roaming the streets.
