Aalborg Christmas Market 2026: Santa and Elves in Gammeltorv

Last Updated: 2 June 2026
No Comments

Every year, Santa arrives in Aalborg by boat, because this is a port city and that’s how things are done in North Jutland. The Aalborg Christmas Market fills Gammeltorv and spills into neighbouring Nytorv, with over 200,000 visitors drawn to its half-metre hot dogs, Ferris wheel views over Budolfi Church, and a Viking jewellery tradition that reflects the region’s Norse roots.

Convenient Hotels

Staying close to Gammeltorv and Nytorv is practical if you want easy access to the festivities. The city centre, centred around this square, offers several options for overnight stays, including those near the waterfront. I recommend Pier 5 Hotel, near the wharf and the Utzon Centre.

Christmas in Aalborg

Aalborg’s Gammeltorv returns this year with added stalls that extend to Nytorv, making the market less crowded. Along with Danish specialties, the market features a diverse mix of stalls selling international foods such as Dutch cheese and Spanish-style churros. There are dedicated seating areas for all ages.

  • Frikadeller: Danish meatballs made of pork.
  • Risengrød: A creamy rice pudding sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, and a dollop of butter is added in the middle.
  • Smørrebrød: Open-faced sandwiches that feature a variety of toppings.
  • Honninghjerte: Translating to “honey hearts,” these are gingerbread-like cookies. They’re often adorned with a layer of chocolate or icing.
