Most visitors see Český Krumlov on a day trip from Prague and are gone before the lights come on. That’s a shame, because the Cesky Krumlov Christmas Market is at its best after dark, when the coaches have left, and the crowd around the tree turns local. I recommend staying the night.

Visitor Feedback
What Visitors Loved
- The evenings win people over. Once the day trippers head back to Prague, the lights come on and the crowd around the tree is mostly Czech.
- It’s compact, with a few dozen wooden stalls and no fairground rides or corporate branding, so you can take it all in with the castle tower lit up above.
- Weekend concerts range from brass bands to rock covers of carols, and the old wooden carousel is a favourite with families.
- Even with the castle interiors shut for winter, the courtyards stay open and the views over the snowy rooftops at dusk are a highlight for many.
Common Complaints
- From late morning to mid afternoon, tour groups from Prague crowd the lanes around the square.
- Mulled wine and food cost noticeably more than in nearby České Budějovice, so don’t expect bargains.
- Stalls pack up early on weekday evenings, which surprises visitors used to the bigger city markets.
- Frosty cobblestones get slippery and the lanes are steep, so wear shoes with grip.
The Bottom Line
Treat the market as a reason to spend a winter night in Český Krumlov rather than a shopping trip in itself. Arrive in the afternoon, walk the castle courtyards before dark, then head back to the square once the coaches have gone.
Location
What to Expect
Local rituals give this market its character, from lighting candles on the town’s Advent wreath to the Bear’s Christmas, when the brown bears that live in the castle moat get a celebration of their own. The programme also includes the public lighting of the tree, St Nicholas celebrations, a live nativity scene with music and a procession of angels through the old town that anyone can join.
Most concerts and family activities fall on weekends, so plan around a Friday to Sunday if the programme matters to you. Before you leave, walk down Šatlavská Street just off the square, which the town has recently decorated as its own lit lane.
Food Specialties
- Trdelník: A popular pastry made by wrapping dough around a stick and roasting it over an open flame.
- Medovina: Honey wine, often warmed and spiced.
- Czech Gingerbread (perník): Rich in flavour and often intricately decorated.
- Moravian Spiced Wine: Mulled wine made with wine from Moravia, the country’s main wine region to the east, and hugely popular.
- Punch (punč): Hot fruit punch, a good switch once you’ve had your fill of mulled wine.
- Klobása: Czech sausage grilled over open fires.
- Potato Pancakes (bramboráky): Crispy and savoury, these thin pancakes are made from grated potatoes and onions.
- Mushroom Soup: A great choice for vegetarians.
Interesting Gifts
- Glass Ornaments: The region has a rich history of glassmaking, and each piece is unique.
- Wooden Toys: Often carved from local timber, ranging from simple figurines to puzzles and games.
- Lace Products: The Bohemian region is renowned for its lacework.
- Ceramic Ware: Mugs, plates and decorative pieces.
- Marionettes: Puppetry has a significant place in Czech culture, and a handcrafted marionette is as much an art piece as a toy.
- Honey Products: From raw honey to beeswax lip balms.
- Advent Wreaths: Handcrafted with locally sourced greenery.
- Beer and Wine: Craft beer and Moravian wines. For beer brewed in town, the Eggenberg brewery sits just below the castle.
Sustainability Tips
- Take the train from Prague: One direct train a day runs from Prague’s main station (Praha hlavní nádraží), and other services connect at České Budějovice with the branch line to Český Krumlov.
- Ride the local bus into town: The railway station sits on the hill above the old town, so catch a local bus to the Špičák stop by the Budějovice Gate or to the bus station, both a short walk from the square.
- Or come by coach: RegioJet and FlixBus coaches from Prague pull into the bus station (autobusové nádraží), within walking distance of the old town.
- Leave the car at the edge: The historic centre is a pedestrian zone, so park in one of the car parks on the outskirts and walk in.

May l know if the resturant , hotel and Christmas market and tourist attraction would be open on 25 Dec 2023. I plan to visit CK town from 24 Dec -26 Dec. Thanks
I don’t think they’ve announced the full program yet. Typically it would be closed on Christmas Day but open on the 26th. But I can’t confirm this. I suggest contacting the tourist office or following their events page for program updates: https://www.ckrumlov.info/en/topevents-108-advent-and-christmas/
