Strasbourg is home to the oldest Christmas market in France and one of the most popular in Europe. Accommodation starts booking out as early as 12 months in advance.
Where to Stay for the Christmas Market
Until Christmas Eve, more than 300 wooden chalets will be selling arts and crafts, food and drinks on Place Kléber and in front of Strasbourg Cathedral. If you want to stay nearby, anywhere on the Grande Île, including the historic Petite France area, would be ideal.

- Use Public Transport: Strasbourg prides itself on its exceptional public transportation system, including trams and buses. Reduce your carbon footprint by using these services or renting a bike. The city has an excellent network of cycling lanes, making it easy and safe to explore on two wheels.
- Choose Renewable Energy Accommodation: Opt for accommodations that run on renewable energy. Many hotels and guest houses in Strasbourg have invested in sustainable energy resources, such as solar or wind power, for their operations. I’ve listed an eco-friendly hotel above.
- Reduce Food Waste: When dining out, ask for smaller portions if you’re not feeling overly hungry to prevent unnecessary food waste. Strasbourg has many eateries committed to reducing food wastage and will be more than happy to oblige.
- Adopt a Sustainable Diet: Strasbourg is in the heart of the Alsace region, renowned for its farm-to-table produce. Indulge in local, organic, and vegetarian meals that support a sustainable food system and reduce environmental impact.
- Limit Air Travel: If possible, avoid flying into Strasbourg. The city is well connected by rail to many European cities, which is a more eco-friendly travel option.
- Support Local Businesses: Buy local while in Strasbourg. Whether shopping for souvenirs or dining out, opting for local businesses helps support the community and reduce the carbon emissions associated with shipping goods from afar.
