The Metz Christmas Market shares that instinct, spreading across five squares of a compact old town where nothing sits more than five minutes from the next run of chalets. Nearly fifty years under German rule left their mark on the food too, which is why you will find Mannele, the little brioche men, sold warm from the stalls.

Public transport: The LE MET’ bus network and P+R park and ride car parks are free on Saturdays and Sundays through most of the market
Parking: Metz has 16 car parks with live availability online. République and Théâtre-Comédie are the closest to the chalets, and the Palais des Sports car park is free
Travel tip: City centre car parks drop to €1 for the evening from 7pm or 8pm, which makes an after-dark visit far cheaper than an afternoon one

• Splitting the market across five squares keeps the crowds moving. Visitors who have done Strasbourg and Colmar consistently say Metz feels manageable by comparison, even at weekends.
• The Sentier des Lanternes is the single most praised part of the whole event, and several visitors say it is the reason to come rather than a side attraction.
• Place Saint-Louis draws the most affection of the five squares, with the medieval arcades doing more for the atmosphere than any of the decorations.
• The Qualité MOSL chalet and the covered market near the cathedral get repeated mentions from visitors hunting for regional produce rather than souvenirs.

Common Complaints

• Food and drink dominate to the point that several visitors describe the crafts as an afterthought. If you are shopping for handmade gifts, this is the most common disappointment.

Metz is a genuinely good market that suffers from being sold as a great one, and it leans far more to eating and drinking than to shopping. Come for the lantern trail and the walk between squares rather than the chalets themselves, and do the Sentier before 7pm.

Place de la République is the biggest of the five and holds the largest tree, the Christmas pyramids and the City Skyliner. Place Saint-Louis is the prettiest, with chalets tucked under medieval arcades. Place d’Armes has the Grande Roue in the shadow of the cathedral, while Place Saint-Jacques and Place de la Comédie are where the eating happens, the latter running late into the evening.

Look for the Qualité MOSL chalet at Place Saint-Jacques, which gathers certified Moselle producers under one roof and is the most reliable place on the whole market for regional food to take home. The year-round Marché Couvert beside the cathedral is worth an hour on its own.

• Pâté lorrain: pork and veal marinated in wine and baked in pastry, the regional pie that is not quiche
