Munster Christmas Market 2026: 6 Markets, 1 Old Town

Give the Munster Christmas Market a full day and an overnight stay, there’s more here than one evening can cover. Stalls stretch through most of the old town, and the best handmade gifts take some searching. When your feet give out, you’ll find good coffee and cake, plus a museum that’s far more interesting than its name suggests.

Parking: Please take public transport to help limit congestion. Parkhaus Alter Steinweg is an accessible option nearby. If you do drive, cyclists have right of way, so watch for bikes coming up on the inside when you turn right.
Travel tips: Add some other winter destinations to your itinerary, like nearby Cologne or Amsterdam. Be sure to visit the Pablo Picasso Museum for something unexpected.
Where to stay: The Central Hotel is a great choice near the Town Hall and Aegidiimarkt.

Convenient Hotels

Münster’s historic centre (Münster-Altstadt) revolves around Prinzipalmarkt and then towards the Town Hall, Picasso Museum and Domplatz. Anywhere around these points of interest would be a great place to stay.

I recommend the Central Hotel Münster. It’s convenient, a 4-minute walk to the events and Prinzipalmarkt. I stayed here on my most recent visit and found it ideally located and very comfortable.

What Visitors Loved

• The markets come into their own in the evening. Several visitors found the daytime pleasant enough, but the evening lights and lit arcades won them over.
• Each market has its own personality, so walking between them is part of the fun. Lamberti gets the most praise for its individual, handmade stock, while the Town Hall and Aegidii markets feel most traditional.
• Crafts outweigh food stalls at the Town Hall market, and visitors rate the quality of what’s on sale above that of bigger, busier markets.
• The food goes well beyond bratwurst. Flame-grilled salmon in a bun, rotisserie ham rolls and loaded potatoes all come up again and again.

Common Complaints

• Saturday evenings around the Town Hall are packed, especially on the weekends closest to Christmas. Weekday afternoons, or Sunday around midday, are far calmer for browsing.
• There’s very little seating near the mulled wine stalls, so expect to eat and drink standing up.
• Not every stall takes cards, so bring some cash.

• Rathausmarkt: Munster’s largest and oldest Advent market fills the courtyard of the historic Town Hall with about 90 stalls, most of them selling crafts, jewellery and toys. There’s also a vintage children’s carousel.

• St. Lamberti Church: Known as the Lichtermarkt (market of lights), with about 30 blue pointed-roof huts at the foot of the church and the city’s biggest Christmas tree. Look for wooden pieces, felt, glass, pottery and candles, and the blueberry mulled wine stall that’s been pouring for nearly three decades.

• Aegidiimarkt: A family favourite in the sheltered courtyard, with a large nativity scene, a wooden pyramid whose carillon chimes every half hour, and a fairytale trail for children. Food runs to potato fritters, flame-grilled salmon, currywurst and kale, plus mulled beer and hot cocktails.

• Giebelhüüskesmarkt: Set in front of the medieval Überwasser Church, with a view across to the cathedral, this one has a student crowd, handicraft stalls and regional treats.

• Kiepenkerl Village: A small Christmas village among the timber-framed houses around the Kiepenkerl, a bronze statue of a travelling Westphalian peddler, with regional specialities, homemade mulled wine and crafts.

• X-MS: Munster’s fair market sits on Harsewinkel Square beside Thomas Schütte’s giant cherry sculpture, with stalls from regional makers, start-ups and local restaurants.

What to Expect

Six markets share the old town, with around 300 stalls between them, and none is more than a few minutes’ walk from the next. They’re close enough to treat as one big market, yet each draws its own crowd. Families gather at Aegidii, students cluster outside Überwasser Church and gift hunters work the Town Hall courtyard.

The arcades of the Prinzipalmarkt, hung with garlands and lit shop windows, link most of them. Stay out past nine and you may hear the tower keeper sounding her horn from the top of St Lambert’s spire every half hour, a tradition the city still keeps up. On the second Sunday of Advent, thousands gather on Cathedral Square (Domplatz) for Münster singt, a free carol sing-along.

When the cold gets to you, a Westphalian meal at the Pinkus Müller brewery is a good way to thaw out. I ate there after a winter walk round the old town, and our waiter, who spoke no English, finished things off with a digestif he seemed to call medicine. It tasted exactly like that, but it warmed me up.

Munster is a fairly modern city, and its architecture isn’t why you come. If you’re picturing the streets of Nuremberg or the grandeur of Dresden, you’ll be comparing it with the wrong places. What it does brilliantly is the market itself: it is huge, takes over a big slice of the old town, and is a great place to find genuine, well-made gifts.

If you live within easy reach, I’d give it two nights. Spend one full day working through the markets, then use the rest of your time for museums, good coffee and cake. The Museum of Lacquer Art sounds dull, but it turned out to be one of my favourite stops on a trip through historic Germany.

• Lights at Lamberti: The organisers switched the market’s outdoor lighting to LED and trimmed the hours it stays on.
• Gifts with a purpose: At Lamberti, the FRED LIEBT IRMA stall sells design pieces made, packed and shipped by people with disabilities.
• Reusable dishes at X-MS: Every food and drink stand on Harsewinkel Square serves on reusable tableware, run with the city’s waste service (awm).
• Support local groups: X-MS keeps one hut for volunteer groups and local initiatives for the whole season, so stop by and see who’s there.
• Park and ride: Leave the car at Coesfelder Kreuz, where the parking ticket includes the bus into the centre for up to five people.
