Wurzburg Christmas Market 2026: On the Romantic Road

Last Updated: 12 October 2026
No Comments

On Advent weekends, the courtyard of Würzburg’s old town hall fills with painters, potters and jewellers selling their own work. Most visitors walk straight past this part of the Würzburg Christmas Market. Out on the squares, beekeepers sell beeswax candles and carvers line up nativity figures beside the usual baubles. Book your room early, though, because the city fills up fast in December.

Convenient Hotels

For easy access to Marktplatz and the historic sites, I recommend staying at Motel One in the Old Town. It’s one of the more affordable options in the city centre. Book early, because Würzburg fills up. I once arrived to find every room in town taken and had to carry on to Bamberg, where I got one of the last rooms.

Recommended Tours

A local guide brings the Old Town to life far faster than a map does, so I recommend a city tour. This is the most popular tour of the Old Town in Würzburg, taking in the Residenz, the Old Main Bridge and the cathedral, with Franconian wine along the way.

Visitor Feedback

What Visitors Loved

  • Visitors coming from Frankfurt and the bigger Bavarian markets find it noticeably calmer, with room to browse without being swept along.
  • The setting wins people over. Several rate it above Bamberg and Frankfurt for looks alone, thanks to the Gothic chapel and rococo façades framing the stalls.
  • The stalls lean towards gifts rather than fairground fun, and glass baubles, straw and wooden stars, linens and local produce all get repeat mentions.
  • It works well as a lunch stop, with bratwurst, potato pancakes and hearty Franconian dishes making it easy to eat your way round.

Common Complaints

  • Plenty of stalls sell the same ornaments and snacks you’ll see elsewhere in Bavaria, and some repeat visitors say the town itself is the bigger draw. The weekend artists’ market is where the more original pieces turn up.
  • Weekend afternoons get packed, especially around the Christmas shop just off the square. A weekday, or a Sunday soon after opening, is far more relaxed.

What to expect text header image

What to Expect

Around 100 wooden stalls fill the upper and lower market squares, gathered around the Gothic Marienkapelle (St Mary’s Chapel) and the yellow rococo Falkenhaus, which also houses the tourist office. The stalls carry on along Eichhornstraße, where a tall wooden Christmas pyramid turns above the shoppers. Local choirs and bands take turns on the stage on the lower square each day, and the music carries across the whole market.

On Advent weekends the courtyard of the old town hall opens as an artists’ Christmas market, with painters, potters and jewellers selling their own work. Children get a small Ferris wheel and a nativity scene, and St Nicholas drops by in early December. Würzburg is also the northern starting point of the Romantic Road, so the market often ends up as the first stop on a drive south to Rothenburg.

Regional Specialties

  • Franconian bratwurst: Longer and coarser than Nuremberg’s finger-sized sausages, grilled and served in a bread roll. For a taste of local cooking, I recommend giving them a try.
  • Winemakers’ mulled wine (Winzerglühwein): Würzburg’s version is often made from Franconian white wine such as Silvaner, so it’s lighter and fruitier than the usual red.
  • Feuerzangenbowle: A rum-soaked sugar cone set alight over a pot of mulled wine, so the caramelised sugar drips into the drink.
  • Lebkuchen (gingerbread): Franconia’s own speciality, soft and spiced, with Nuremberg’s bakers only an hour away.
  • Potato pancakes: Often served with apple sauce. Vegetarians often gravitate towards them (although they’re sometimes cooked in lard).
  • Schneeballen: A specialty from nearby Rothenburg, Schneeballen are deep-fried dough balls, often coated in powdered sugar or chocolate. These are a bit overrated in my experience!
Gifts header.

Gifts and Stocking Fillers

  • Franconian wine: Sold in the squat, round Bocksbeutel bottle that’s unique to the region, and a far more local souvenir than another mug.
  • Beeswax candles and honey: Beekeepers from the surrounding villages sell candles and honey, and there’s candle-making with real wax if you’d rather make your own.
  • Nativity figures: Carved and painted figures to build up a crib scene, a long-standing tradition in Catholic Franconia.
  • Artists’ market pieces: Paintings, porcelain and jewellery from the makers themselves in the old town hall courtyard, on Advent weekends only.
  • Ceramic pottery: Stoneware and pottery from Franconian workshops, practical enough to use every day.
