Vilnius Christmas Market 2026: Cathedral Square’s Famous Tree and Chalets

Last Updated: 1 July 2026
2 Comments

I highly rate Vilnius as a winter destination. The medieval Old Town, one of the largest in Europe, looks genuinely striking under snow, and the Vilnius Christmas Market fills its main square with over 100 wooden chalets that feel scaled to the city rather than inflated for tourists. Lithuania’s take on the season blends Catholic traditions with Baltic folk customs, and the whole thing runs without the overwhelming crowds you’ll encounter further west.

Convenient Hotels

Cathedral Square is located on the edge of the Old Town in Vilnius. It’s a nice area with several sights and attractions, but you might prefer to stay closer to the Town Hall and City Gate, where there are more places to eat out and many museums.

I stayed in a couple of places in Vilnius and found this more central area more convenient. A good central option is Artagonist Art Hotel, which is exactly halfway between Cathedral Square and the Town Hall.

Recommended Tours

I recommend this city tour of Vilnius, as it allows you to see all the highlights of the city. You’ll visit the historic Gediminas Castle, Cathedral Square and St Anne’s Church.

Travel tip: Consider adding the other Baltic States capitals to your itinerary.

Visitor Feedback

What Visitors Loved

  • The lack of crowds is the standout. Visitors repeatedly contrast it with the shoulder-to-shoulder crush of German and Austrian markets, describing a relaxed mix of tourists and local families.
  • The Cathedral Square tree lives up to its reputation. Even people underwhelmed by the stalls said the tree and the lit-up Old Town were worth the trip on their own.
  • Value on activities stands out. Ice skating and the Christmas train are noticeably cheaper than equivalents further west, and the train ride is free.
  • The 13 December “extra Christmassy” day drew warm comments, with choirs, festive post boxes and the special Christmas currency.

Common Complaints

  • The market is small and quick to walk. Several visitors warned that anyone coming to Vilnius purely for the market will be disappointed, and recommended treating it as one part of a wider city break.
  • The food skews heavily sweet. Repeat reviewers noted the absence of grilled sausages and savoury staples, with doughnuts, pastries and chocolate-dipped fruit dominating the stalls.
  • Vegetarians and vegans found slim pickings on the savoury side, often ending up with side dishes or sweets.
  • Food and drink prices felt closer to Western European levels than expected, even where crafts and attractions were cheaper.

The Bottom Line

Vilnius rewards visitors who come for the city and let the market be the festive extra, not the main event. Go after dark for the tree and lights, and plan your savoury meals at a restaurant rather than the stalls.

What to Expect

Vilnius’ market is known as Christmas Town and is the highlight of winter in Lithuania. Cathedral Square is home to one of the most stunning Christmas trees in the world. Two other Christmas markets are located at Vinco Kudirkos Square and Odminių Square. They end on 1st January.

Vilnius Lithuania

The Famous Christmas Tree

The Vilnius Christmas tree is known for being one of Europe’s most unique and beautiful. It symbolises Vilnius and its long-standing traditions.

This tree is special because it features thousands of handmade ornaments created by Lithuanian artisans, who use a variety of materials, including natural fibres, wood, and glass.

They feature traditional Lithuanian motifs and symbols, such as folk patterns, angels, and stars, along with thousands of energy-efficient LED lights.

Food header.

Traditional Lithuanian Food

  • Kūčiukai: Small, crunchy, slightly sweet bread bites that are traditionally eaten during Kūčios, the main Christmas Eve meal, and traditionally washed down with cranberry juice.
  • Šaltibarščiai: This cold beet soup is usually served as an appetiser. Boiled potatoes and hard-boiled eggs often accompany it.
  • Mushroom sauce: A vegetarian alternative to the traditional meat sauce served with kugelis, a Lithuanian potato pudding.
  • Beets with horseradish: A simple and delicious side dish made with boiled beets and grated horseradish.
  • Kavos pudingas: This coffee pudding is a popular Lithuanian dessert.
  • Medaus tortas: A honey cake with a soft, creamy filling covered in a layer of caramelised sugar.
  • Kepsneliai: Small, crispy potato pancakes.
  • Šakotis: a tall, spiky “tree cake” baked in layers over an open flame, a Lithuanian celebration staple.
Market stalls header.

At the Market Stalls

  • Kibinai: savoury pastries from Lithuania’s Karaim community, filled with meat or vegetables.
  • Varškės spurgos: small sugar-dusted doughnuts made from cottage cheese, best with a chocolate or pistachio sauce.
  • Kugelis: a baked Lithuanian potato pudding.
  • Cepelinai: large potato dumplings stuffed with meat or curd cheese and served with sour cream and bacon. Very filling.
  • Žagarėliai: crisp fried pastry ribbons dusted with icing sugar.
  • Oscypek: a smoked, salted sheep’s cheese grilled and sliced, often topped with meat or cranberries.

Visit one of these restaurants to experience some of the best food in Vilnius.

Things to do header.

Things to Do in Winter

  • Vilnius Christmas Tree – In the centre of Cathedral Square, in Vilnius’s historic World Heritage-listed Old Town.
  • Cathedral Belfry – For a small fee, you can walk up the cathedral belfry for the best views of Vilnius from above.
  • Gediminas Tower – This tower offers a different but equally wonderful view of Vilnius (€5 entrance fee). The view is particularly special at sunset.
  • Town Hall Square – This smaller market is quieter, although it can get busy on weekends.
  • Vilnius Train Station – A little unexpected is a market at Vilnius Train Station. This is a more contemporary market featuring modern music, food trucks (which are actually train carriages serving food), and Lithuanian art.

Sustainability Tips

  • Shop mindfully. Only purchase what you need.
  • Walk, cycle and use public transport to get around.
  • Stay in a sustainable hotel powered by renewable energy.
  • Stay in hotels. Short-stay apartment accommodation can lead to a lack of affordable housing for locals.
  • Avoid using plastic or buying items made or packaged with plastic.
  • Try to eat locally sourced organic food where possible.
  • Limit your consumption of meat and dairy.
  • Be open to diverse cultures and experiences.
  • Explore more than just the main tourist areas.
  • Support the arts and attend local events.
  • Visit fewer places but stay longer at each destination.

I don’t think it has been announced yet. Last year it was on the 27th so it will most likely be on Saturday 26th November 2022.
