Madeira Christmas Market 2026: Stay for the Fireworks

Last Updated: 15 October 2026
No Comments

A light jacket is all you’ll need at the Madeira Christmas Market, where December afternoons usually sit around 20°C. That changes the whole outing. You can sit outside with a poncha, wander the lit streets after dark without rushing indoors, and still be on the seafront at midnight on New Year’s Eve. It’s a market for people who love the season but not the cold.

Recommended Tours

On this Funchal Old Town walking tour, you can visit the city’s landmarks with a local guide. It’s particularly good if you’re new to Funchal. You’ll be introduced to sites such as the Farmers’ Market, Campo Almirante Reis and the Fortress of St James.

Alternatively, you might want to try this food and wine walking tour.

What to Expect

The stalls line the central strip of Avenida Arriaga, selling regional products from cakes and liqueurs to flowers, with music several times a day. Right beside them, a small ethnographic village of thatched-roof cottages has artisans at work, and a giant nativity scene with hundreds of tiny figures covers the fountain at Largo da Restauração.

After dark the whole centre lights up, from the Municipal Garden down to the seafront and out along the pier. It’s worth walking the lot rather than just the market strip.

The night locals wait for is Noite do Mercado (Market Night) on 23 December. Thousands of Madeirans head to the Farmers’ Market (Mercado dos Lavradores) for last-minute fruit, flowers and poncha, the streets around it fill with stalls, and carols are sung inside the market for well over an hour. The music outside keeps going until the small hours.

New Year’s Eve is the finale. Fireworks go up from the hillsides above the city, the seafront and boats in the bay, and the cruise ships moored in the harbour join in with their horns.

Food Specialties

  • Bolo de mel (honey cake): A dense, dark cake made with sugarcane honey, spices and dried fruit. It’s traditionally broken by hand rather than cut, and it keeps for months.
  • Broas de mel (honey biscuits): Small round biscuits, crunchy outside and soft in the middle.
  • Carne de vinha d’alhos (garlic and wine pork): Pork marinated for days in wine and garlic, the island’s Christmas dish. At the stalls it comes stuffed into bolo do caco.
  • Bolo do caco: A round flatbread baked on a stone slab and served warm with garlic butter.
  • Poncha: The island’s drink, made with sugarcane spirit (aguardente de cana), honey, sugar and lemon or orange juice.
  • Madeira wine: The island’s fortified wine. The sweeter Bual and Malmsey are the styles to try with honey cake.

Gifts and Stocking Fillers

  • Madeira embroidery (bordado Madeira): Hand-stitched designs of local flowers and plants, on everything from tablecloths to shawls.
  • Wickerwork: Baskets and small pieces from Camacha, the village at the heart of the island’s wicker trade.
  • Sugarcane honey (mel de cana): The dark syrup that goes into honey cake, sold in bottles to take home.
  • Liqueurs: Island flavours like passion fruit, banana and hibiscus.
  • Madeira wine: A bottle to take home, from the stalls or from Blandy’s Wine Lodge on the same avenue.

Sustainability Tips

  • Walk the lights: Funchal’s illuminations now use LED technology only, with recyclable materials in the displays. They’re spread from the Municipal Garden down to the seafront and the pier, so they’re best seen on foot.
  • Leave the car for Market Night: Streets around the Farmers’ Market close from mid-afternoon, and the council asks visitors to come in on Horários do Funchal buses rather than drive.
