Lincoln Christmas Market 2026: Cancelled

Last Updated: 15 April 2026
3 Comments

The Lincoln Christmas Market was a four-day, 250-stall event centred on the steep cobbled lane leading up to the cathedral and castle. It was one of the largest in the UK, but has since been cancelled. I’ve kept this page here for reference in case it returns in future years.

Important update: Lincoln Christmas Market has been permanently cancelled.

Note: Want to know if anything changes? Sign up for our newsletter to get notified of any updates.

This market had a unique charm and was a significant part of the UK’s Christmas scene over the last four decades. Due to financial and logistical issues, it will not take place this year, and its future remains uncertain.

If you were planning to attend and are still keen on experiencing a festive market this year, you might like one of these UK Christmas Markets as an alternative.

Convenient Hotels

Many of Lincoln’s sights and attractions are found in the Cathedral Quarter, so it’s nice to stay in this area. The Castle Hotel is a good option here as it’s within walking distance of many things to do, but quiet enough to be relaxing.

What to Expect

Lincoln Cathedral is an incredible piece of history in the centre of the city. Built in 1072, it was once the world’s tallest building and is a stunning example of Gothic architecture. The cathedral is known for its intricate carvings, stunning stained-glass windows, and the famous Lincoln Imp statue. It also houses one of the four surviving copies of the Magna Carta.

But that’s not all there is to see. Visit Steep Hill, a steeply inclined street filled with independent shops and cafes. Explore Newport Arch, a well-preserved Roman gateway still in use today. Walk through Stonebow, a medieval gate that houses the Guildhall, and then head over to Lincoln Castle, where you can learn about its history.

Medieval Lincoln Cathedral looms over the city centre.

Sustainability Tips

  • Shop mindfully. Only purchase what you need.
  • Walk, cycle and use public transport to get around.
  • Stay in a sustainable hotel powered by renewable energy.
  • Avoid using plastic or buying items made or packaged with plastic.
  • Try to eat locally sourced organic food where possible.
  • Limit your consumption of meat and dairy.
  • Support the arts and attend local events.

The council cancelled the event last year. What are your thoughts on this decision? Do you think the market should return? Share your opinions and join the conversation!

Lincoln Council should offer the event to entreprenuers to organise the event on a contractual basis. I would not expect councillors to be able to organise a commercially viable mass event any more than I would expect them to organise self funding monthly events to help cover the costs of the market.

I have gone to the Lincoln Xmas market every year for the last 10 years. I am sooooo disappointed it is not happening I always brought my friends from London and we came on the train from my house in Retford we all loved it so much. It was far better than all the others. This is a huge disappointment

Many people were disappointed. Have you heard if it’s returning in 2024 or is it really permanently cancelled?
