Cambria Christmas Market 2026: German-Style in California

Last Updated: 2 July 2026
No Comments

The Cambria Christmas Market is one of the few places in the US where you can wander a 1.25-mile path through 3 million lights, grab a Glühwein from the biergarten and ride a miniature train through the pine trees of California’s Central Coast. Inspired by traditional German Christkindlmarkts and now in its 14th season, this evening-only event at Cambria Pines Lodge draws over 45,000 visitors each year.

Convenient Hotels

Cambria Pines Lodge is the host hotel, offering the most convenient place to stay. Rooms are booked well in advance, but some are still available at the time of writing. Check availability here.

A great alternative is Olallieberry Inn. The reviews are exceptional, and it’s a 4-minute drive or a 20-minute walk to the event.

As both of these options fill up early, read my guide to hotels in Cambria for more places to stay.

Visitor Feedback Header

Visitor Feedback

What Visitors Loved

  • The light displays are the consistent highlight. With 3 million lights across themed tunnels, hillside installations and pine tree canopies, visitors regularly describe the experience as spectacular and worth returning for.
  • Families praise the event as a genuine annual tradition. The combination of train rides, Santa photos, live music and fire pits makes it work for all ages.
  • The German-inspired food and Glühwein in the biergarten get strong praise, with several visitors recommending the bratwurst and hot chocolate in the collectible market mugs.
  • Staying at Cambria Pines Lodge is frequently mentioned as the best way to experience the market, with guests walking straight from their rooms into the event.

Common Complaints

  • Crowds are the most frequent issue. Weekend evenings and dates closer to Christmas can feel packed, and several visitors found it hard to enjoy the displays at peak times.
  • Ticket prices feel steep to some visitors, particularly once you add food, drinks and train rides on top of the entry fee. Buying online in advance saves about $10 per ticket compared to the door price.
  • Some visitors found the vendor stalls underwhelming compared to the lights, noting that the shopping component doesn’t always match the quality of an authentic German market.
  • The crossing between the Lodge side and the Cambria Nursery side can involve long waits during busy periods.

The Bottom Line

Cambria is all about the lights. The 1.25-mile walk through 3 million illuminations is genuinely impressive, and the German food and biergarten atmosphere adds something you won’t find at a typical holiday light show. Visit on a weeknight or earlier in the season for a far more enjoyable experience, and book your tickets online well in advance.

Christmas Lights

The light display is the centrepiece of the event. Over 3 million lights line a 1.25-mile path through the Cambria Pines Lodge grounds and neighbouring Cambria Nursery, with themed displays that change each year. Tunnels, hillside installations and canopy displays wrap through the pine trees, and rainy nights add an extra dimension as the lights reflect off wet surfaces.

Beyond the lights, the event includes a miniature train ride ($5 per person), live music in the biergarten and amphitheatre, cosy fire pits and Santa photos.

Travel tip: Set aside a couple of hours to take in all the displays.

Food header.

At the Food Stalls

  • Bratwurst Sandwich: Hearty sausages in crusty bread rolls.
  • Bratkartoffeln: Loaded fried potatoes with crispy bacon, onions and your choice of toppings.
  • Currywurst and Fries: Iconic German street food.
  • Eintopf (Lentil) Stew: Traditional German stew, one of the heartier options for cooler evenings.
  • Chicken Schnitzel Fingers: Crunchy, golden chicken snacks.
  • Senfgurken: Homemade German-style pickles.
  • Mushrooms with Garlic Sauce: A popular plant-based dish.
  • Stollen: Christmas bread filled with dried fruit and marzipan.
  • Apfelkuchen mit Streusel: Apple cake with a crumbly streusel topping.
  • Lebkuchen: Spiced gingerbread cookies.
  • Kettle Corn: Sweet, salty and freshly popped at the stall.
  • Candied Almonds: Roasted and sugar-coated nuts.
  • Hot Dog: Compare the classic hot dogs with German bratwurst.
  • Cinnamon Roll: Soft, sweet rolls are dusted with cinnamon sugar.

What to Buy

  • German Nutcrackers and Smokers: Hand-crafted decorations and incense burners imported from Germany’s Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) region.
  • Glass-Blown Ornaments: Hand-blown and hand-painted ornaments imported from Germany.
  • Local Artwork: Cambria is home to a thriving artistic community. A piece of local art makes a thoughtful, one-of-a-kind gift.
  • Central Coast Wine: Cambria sits in the heart of Paso Robles wine country. Grab a bottle from one of the local vineyard vendors.
  • Artisan Food: Local cheeses, jams, jellies and other gourmet products from Central Coast producers.
  • Hand-Poured Candles: Soy candles scented with locally sourced ingredients.
  • Handmade Jewellery: Pieces crafted by local artisans.

Sustainable Travel Tips

Using the shuttle system helps reduce traffic around the lodge. To further reduce your footprint, bring reusable bags and water bottles. Cambria is a walkable town, so consider exploring Main Street on foot during the day before the market opens. California often faces water shortages, so be mindful of your usage during your stay.
