Lille is easily accessible for those located in the UK, Belgium, and, of course, France. A quick ride on the train will take you to one of the best food-oriented cities in France.

Based on my visits to Lille, I’ve selected the best places to visit the Christmas markets and spend a short time in the city this winter.

A new, modern hotel just a 4-minute walk to the Lille Christmas market on Rihour Square. The rooms are bright and airy with carefully chosen furniture to support the sleek but warm design. Excellent value for money considering the designer furniture and small luxury features including a 24-hour gym, spa and common living area where you can enjoy complimentary snacks and an aperitif. Located on a pedestrian street is a huge benefit as you won’t experience the pollution from direct car exhausts and the evening will be quiet away from traffic.

Luxury Hotel
Grand Hotel Bellevue
Address: 5, rue Jean Roisin, Lille, France
The luxurious Grand Hotel Bellevue is ideal if you want to be as close as possible to the Christmas markets. Near Lille’s Christmas tree on Grand Place (sometimes called Place du General de Gaulle), this is one of Lille’s most well-known and highly rated hotels. The location is convenient for the Christmas market, all the sights in the historic old town, famous places like Patisserie Meert, Aux Merveilleux de Fred and local Estiminet breweries, where you can try some Lillois specialties.

Moxy Lille City Centre
Address: 3, Rue Jean Bart, Lille Centre
Featuring family rooms, this is an excellent hotel for groups. There is a gym, evening entertainment and a 24-hour front desk. The gorgeous historic building is a bonus. This hotel isn’t quite near the markets like other hotels listed here. Still, the location is perfect for visiting other sights, including the Palais des Beaux-Arts, the Natural History Museum, Porte de Paris and Lille Belfy. Staying here gives you easy access to some of Lille’s most prestigious cultural sights and the famous Wazemmes open market. If you are interested in Art Nouveau architecture, the Moxy is down the road from Maison Coilliot (14 Rue de Fleurus), an incredible building by famous architect Hector Guimard.
Apartment Stay
Au 30
Address: 30 rue Paul Duez, Lille Centre
If you would like more space than you typically get in a hotel room, the apartments at Au 30 are exceptional. Modern and extremely clean with high-quality fixtures and fittings. The incredible attention to detail by the host makes all the difference. Each apartment is unique, so you could be surprised when you arrive. The only downside is that this place is not near the Christmas markets; it’s near the train station, approximately 1 km from Place Rihour, which will take 15 minutes or so if you’re walking. So it’s not that far, but it could be inconvenient if the winter weather is poor.
Travel tip: Lille is located in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France, not far from the Belgian border. If you would like to extend your December holiday, you might wish to add a trip to Brussels, Ghent or Bruges or continue south to Strasbourg, another great Christmas city in France.
