Trier Christmas Market 2026 Dates & Roman UNESCO Sites

Last Updated: 1 July 2026
No Comments

Founded by the Romans as Augusta Treverorum, Trier has a legitimate claim to being Germany’s oldest city, and the 2nd-century Porta Nigra still stands as proof. The Trier Christmas Market draws on that layered history, and browsing stalls set against Roman, medieval, and baroque architecture in a single compact Altstadt is an experience few other German cities can match.

What to Expect

Winter in Trier is a lovely time of the year, as the UNESCO city is adorned with pretty lights. Around 100 decorated wooden huts at the Advent market sell festive goods, gifts, souvenirs and food products.

The event is centred around the city’s historic Hauptmarkt, with the Church of Our Lady and St Peter’s Cathedral serving as the backdrop.

The goods range from handcrafted decorations and wooden toys to Mosel wines, ideal for a touch of holiday shopping.

  • Nativity Scenes: Typically crafted with local woods.
  • Pyramids: Wooden carousels inspired by the mining history of the Erzgebirge region feature candle designs that, when lit, cause the heat to spin the pyramid.
  • Clothing: Woollen scarves, hats, mittens and socks.

Sustainability Tips

  • Green Hotels: Make a conscious effort to support a hotel that uses renewable energy.
  • Food Waste: Trier’s food scene is vibrant. However, it’s essential to be mindful of food waste. Plan your meals, buy only what you need, and ask for smaller portions if you’re not very hungry.
  • Ethical Consumption: Support local makers who use sustainable materials and packaging.
  • Sustainable Diets: Order plant-based or vegetarian options, which are more eco-friendly.
  • Transport: Consider using public transport or cycling to explore Trier. The city is well-connected by bus lines and has a comprehensive network of cycling paths for those who prefer to bike. Walking is another excellent option when the weather is nice.
