Best Christmas Markets in the USA: Where to Go in 2026

Last Updated: 2 July 2026
No Comments

The best Christmas markets in the USA give you exactly what you’re after in December. Rows of wooden stalls, glühwein steaming in a keepsake mug, and gifts you can’t find elsewhere. A few rival the traditional European experience, while plenty are holiday markets in name only. This guide covers which are worth your time, what to expect, and what past visitors have to say.

Our Top Picks

Looking for a specific market? Skip to the full list ↓.

1. Chicago

Chicago in the snow

Running since 1996, this is the most convincing slice of a German Christkindlmarket anywhere in North America, from the striped chalet roofs to the Stiefel boot mugs regulars queue for each year. Handmade Lauscha glass ornaments and imported wooden toys fill the stalls, and it remains the market that other American cities measure themselves against.

2. Philadelphia

Philadelphia Town Hall with holiday lights

Christmas Village is one of the older German-style markets in the country, styled on the traditional Weihnachtsmarkt with timber huts and an Alpine bar pouring Glühwein. The mix leans towards imported ornaments and genuine handcrafts rather than mass-produced stall filler.

3. Bryant Park, New York

Bryant Park with snow

The Winter Village is one of the busiest markets in the country, leaning towards curated boutique shopping, a free-to-skate rink and a glass-walled food hall rather than a traditional market. Behind the New York Public Library, the glass-fronted kiosks stock local designers and makers rather than the usual imported ornaments, and the skating draws as many people as the stalls. It’s a genuine NYC winter holiday experience.

4. Carmel

Carmel holiday stalls

Indiana seems an unlikely home for one of the country’s best Christmas markets, but Carmel has quickly earned its reputation. It is purpose-built and tightly curated, with an ice track looping around the huts instead of a plain rink, and a genuine lean towards German food and imported Bierkrüge and nutcrackers.

5. Denver

Denver city skyline

Denver makes the most of its Rocky Mountain setting, and the cold, clear evenings do more for the Glühwein-and-timber-hut mood than most American holiday markets manage. Krampus night and the illuminated Mile High Tree are the talking points that keep locals coming back.

Visitor Feedback

What Visitors Loved

  • The German-heritage markets deliver on food and craft, with handmade Lauscha glass ornaments, Bratwurst, Raclette and Glühwein in collectible boot mugs the things people travel for.
  • Evenings win. Visitors consistently say the lights, illuminated trees and drone shows transform the mood after dark, even at markets they found flat by day.
  • The best of them genuinely evoke Europe, with Chicago and Carmel praised by people who have done the real Weihnachtsmärkte abroad.

Common Complaints

  • Crowding is the number one gripe, especially weekends and evenings at the big markets, where lines can run around the block and stalls get too packed to reach.
  • Value divides people, with cash-only stalls, pricey food and paid parking the recurring frustrations.
  • Expectations set by Europe can bite, and travellers comparing US markets to the originals sometimes find them smaller or more commercial than the name suggests.

The Bottom Line

The strongest US markets reward you for timing your visit well, so go on a weekday, arrive mid-afternoon before the after-work rush, then linger after dark for the lights. Bring cash and layer up, since most are outdoors and plenty of vendors still don’t take cards.
